Obama to Boehner: 'I Will Use Inaugural Address, State of the Union to Blame GOP'

Statesmanship at its finest: during fiscal cliff talks, President Obama reportedly told Speaker Boehner that he would use his two major speeches in January to blame Republicans for the stalled deal. According to the Wall Street Journal, the president wasn't too happy with the options House Republicans were willing to present, and made it clear he was willing to throw the GOP under the bus for the nation's financial woes.

Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn't reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.

At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, "I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?"

"You get nothing," the president said. "I get that for free."

Sounds like those talks are going really well.

In seriousness, the article makes clear that the president has refused any and all deals Boehner has offered, even those in which Republicans capitulated on tax hikes for the wealthy, an Obama staple. It's clear that the president and the House are both unwilling to bend to one anothers' terms, and it's disconcerting to see that Obama would rather use his platform to keep pointing fingers than for some more inspiring message, nevermind swallowing his pride and accepting a semi-viable deal.

Obama claims to have modeled himself after Lincoln, but it certainly doesn't sound like he's minding his favored predecessor's example of how to compose a second inaugural address in times of turmoil:

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

Imagine the man who spoke those words coming before his country in a time of distress and blaming a rival political party for all the nation's ills; it's impossible. Obama is a well-known admirer of the Lincoln biography "Team of Rivals," but while he's talking to the other side, he seems unwilling to listen. Apparently, he's content with laying blame and saving face at the expense of the nation's financial health.

What I’m wondering is who is going to give the Republican response?

This is a sterling opportunity here if the right person does it. The person needs to be a solid, rock-ribbed conservative.

Maybe it should be Jim DeMint as he is on his way out the door anyway.

The person should be able to list all the proposals, studies, analyses that have been done (e.g. Simpson/Bowles) that Ears has rejected.

It’s time to call out Ears on what he has been doing, as Reagan said, in bold colors. There should be no mystery, no wiggle room, for Ears and his cohorts, Stretch and the Undertaker.

If Ears truly does this during the State of the Union speech, the entire Republican caucus should walk out.

Lot's of funny stuff in response to this article, BUT, consider what would happen if

(a) We had a wimp as Speaker - Bozo would get what he wants and while ignoring the constitution he would destroy America financially

(b) We had a Democrat controlled House as well as a Senate - we would descend into a Dictatorship in 2 years flat. He would ask for powers to be granted and would seize other powers that he wanted without regard. The Left is 'Deceitful' and Authoritarian to the bone.

Poor old confused Mr. Boehner forgot one little thing. The King doesn't negotiate. He tells his subjects what to do or they suffer the consequences...

boehner has surrendered and he will make obama’s SOTU a platinum historic event. They will shower obama with rose petals paid for by the rnc... you have to realize that these are not republicans that control the gop... they are not gop/e... they are gop/D for dim!

The SOTU address is delivered in the House chamber. Boehner’s in charge there. He should simply turn off Barry’s microphone.

Even better, take the British example and when Barry arrives at the House chamber's doorway, slam the door in his face.

The answer to the demagogue must be based on careful analysis of our own opportunities to use coming events to hit back in the arena of public thinking. The time between now & Obama's major opportunities, should be employed in evaluating opportunities & constructing strategy. Conservatives must not assume that the public is too stupid to understand economic reality. There are plenty of "folksy," common sense, points that can be made, which will trigger levers of credibility in people's minds.

Traditional social values, including market economics, and the need to have local decisions on every local & immediate subject, not distant centralized bureaucratic decisions, govern. (It is also a lot cheaper to have welfare, education & medical care for those in genuine need, financed locally, rather than through incredibly wasteful bureaucracies. And most people can easily grasp that, if it is properly explained.)

We need to stop fearing a debate that we can win.

Boehner allowed himself to be played. He stayed true to the high earners, and screwed everyone in the process.

Just wait till he gets to 2nd amendment stuff.

This same POS was just as bis of an a$$hole when Bush was still President and the resident of the "newly created Office of the President Elect" demanded bailout money that he then blamed Bush for "spending".
