The New Year could push milk prices to $7 a gallon.
With Congress spending all its time trying to avert the fiscal cliff, a slew of other legislative matters are going unattended. One of them is the agriculture bill which, if not addressed, could lead to a doubling of the price of milk early next year.
...
Sky-high milk prices wouldn't necessarily be good for dairy farmers either, according to Chris Galen, a spokesman for the National Milk Producers Federation, which represents over 30,000 dairy farmers.
While it might provide a short term boost to profits, there's a fear that consumers would either cut back on dairy or opt for imported diary products. It could also force food makers to search for alternatives to dairy, like soy.
...
To prevent the price spike, Congress either needs to extend the current bill, pass a new bill, or enact some provision to keep the 1949 law from taking effect.
Given the current state of the fiscal cliff talks and Congress' inability to get things done in general, dairy lovers might want to stock up now.

my aunt had 6 kids ( and usually “guests” for dinner) and did wonders with powdered milk.
Good heavens is that Ahnold in drag? Those Achilles tendons look like they’re gonna pop.
Balderdash....... rabble rousing clap trap.
They don’t control the Congress and hate it
You tell'em hoss!
Wow, can I quote you on that? Tagline material if I ever saw.
LOL, I bet once your opinion is spread far and wide nobody will ever drink milk again.
Or maybe not.
Is that Obama in heels?
This is the stupid dairy compact which was Jim Jeffords reward for screwing the GOP in 2001. Bush should have vetoed it then! Tell the dairy farmers to produce more milk and the price will drop. No more subsidy!
I'm sorry but, unless the Republicans cave to each and every demand of the most merciful Obama (peace be unto him), the children will all die.
monday morning, President Pretentious will blame the cows. they are doing this just to make him look bad.
Meat, milk, eggs have already gone up due to the lefts policies of ethanol, which raises the cost of feed, which has absolutely no purpose other than paying off the Corn lobby.
If milk goes up, it goes up. Unless something is done about taxes, too much government legislation, and liberal activist policies, things are going to keep going in the same direction. Eventually, not only will the control freaks in Washington run out of money - EVERYONE will.
As long as the control freaks are still controlling, this is what America gets. If the voters are going to break it by voting for more of this, they're going to have to pay for it.
Let them drink milk (at $7 a gallon).
Doesn’t milk cause global warming?
At age 15 one of my first jobs was working in a dairy barn. Started 4:30 before school. We had these fancy milkers with a suction cup for each teat. One cow had ripped off one of her teats during a winter thaw. After she was all healed and back in line for milking I was at a loss how to hook up the milkers to her, as all four needed to have suction to work. Using the old brain pan I had an eureka moment and stuck my thumb into the last milker. Problem solved. However, after 4 or five days of twice a day milking my thumb was getting really sore and purple. That’s when the girl who worked the other side came over, grabed the hose above the 4th milker when I was hooking up the 3-teated cow, and crimped it. Geesh.
“Thats OK, milk isnt good for you anyway.”
No. Apparently milk isn’t good for *you*. *I* don’t have a problem with dairy.
Now tomatoes... Tomatoes are not good for *me*. So I don’t eat them.
But I *don’t* try to tell *you* what works for *your* body.
Since I’ve changed to Silk®, I can’t stand the taste of milk. It smells spoiled. Even when its fresh.
Dairy Subsidies for 2011 were only $1,000,000...it’s a drop in the milk bucket.
I don't think anybody told you anything about what what works for your body. Does milk make you irrational or moody?
I thought you were going to say she hooked it up to herself but . . . no.
You’re too funny, BipolarBob! lol!
Yeah. Michelle.
Milk is for babies.
-Ahnold
No other creature drinks the milk of another animal, and even then, mammal babies generally get weaned. (well, except cats)
