Obama urges lawmakers to make one last try for fiscal crisis deal, leaves for Hawaii

President Obama urged congressional leaders Friday to take one last shot at crafting a bill that can prevent tax hikes on middle-class Americans -- as he and virtually everyone involved prepared to bolt Washington for the holidays.
The president, while optimistically claiming he would be back "next week" to handle a budget deal, was planning to board Air Force One with his family Friday evening for a holiday vacation in Hawaii. House Speaker John Boehner, who until several days ago was Obama's negotiating partner, headed home to Ohio.
It remained unclear whether they really would return next week to strike a deal.
Time is running short before sweeping tax hikes kick in Jan. 1 -- followed by aggressive automatic spending cuts -- and the two left in their wake a cacophony of recriminations over stalled efforts to avert the looming fiscal crisis and growing doubts about the prospects for compromise.
After a Republican package collapsed in the House the night before, the president said he remained optimistic. "I actually still think we can get it done," Obama said, after meeting briefly with Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid and speaking separately with Boehner.
Obama specifically called on Congress to pass a bill that extends current tax rates for middle-class Americans, which he typically defines as those making under $250,000. He said such a package should also extend long-term unemployment aid and lay "the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction."
"That's an achievable goal. That can get done in 10 days," he said, adding he would "immediately" sign it into law before Jan. 1. "It's that simple."

The Food Stamp President doesn’t want a deal. He gets the higher taxes and blames the Republicans for lack of a deal. The economy continues into a depression from the current recession (no we never left the recession). This will be the crisis that he wants to attempt his communist power grab.
But Obama will get the blame for no unemployment insurance extension, no payroll tax extension and job losses from the sequester. I think he's going to be hurting worse from the coming cliff or possible band-aid they throw together.
Obama did not put the work into this package that it required because he was lazy and left it for others to do. Instead he went gallivanting and demogoguing around the country. He's in for a VERY tough 4 years.
when th ehell is this man actually going to do his job and lead instead of saying hre has told others to make or form a bill.
Hell does he think all he has to do is vacation , have a cncert in the white house, have a party and then decide which bills he would like to sign today.

Simple: the House controls the checkbook. They get to tell Jr. how much he can spend. Period. Pass the bill, send it to him, and if he doesn't like it he gets less, i.e. shut 'er down entirely. The President is the executive, he gets to execute. Execute with what he has been given. Let the House pass what it will, and let 'em wash their hands. In my NSHO that is the main focus of their job anyway, so do it, suck it up, and enjoy the fallout.
Was just looking at comments made by that fool LaTourrette from Ohio referring to “50 Knuckleheads” in the Republican house as blocking everything poor Boehner wants.
Obama has achieved his objecting at splitting the House with the comments that this idiot has made about his fellow Republicans.
