Brady group: Arming teachers ‘insane’

The head of the country’s most prominent gun control advocacy group on Tuesday called a Texas GOP congressman’s idea to arm teachers “insane.”

“There are 40 people behind me who would love to respond to that,” said Dan Gross, the president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, when asked at a Capitol Hill press conference about Rep. Louie Gohmert’s suggestion to arm teachers and principals to prevent future school shootings. “But in their spirit, I will do on behalf of them: That’s insane.”

Gross, whose brother was wounded during a mass shooting at the Empire State Building in 1997, was standing in front of 40 family members of gun violence victims, including family members of victims of deadly mass shootings in Tucson, Ariz., at Columbine High School, in Aurora, Colo., at Virginia Tech and the South Capitol Street shooting in Washington, D.C. Family members nodded their heads as Gross spoke.

“Think about what that’s saying,” Gross said. “It’s saying the only answer to violence is more violence. The only answer to guns is more guns.”

Gross said additional weapons at most of the “chaotic” mass shootings of recent years, including his brother’s shooting, and at the mass shooting in Aurora earlier this year, would have only resulted in “more carnage.”

“I would hope the representative is held responsible for irresponsible statements like that,” Gross added.

Among the 40 family members was Andrei Nikitchyuk, whose 8-year-old son, Bear, was a student at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where 26 people were shot and killed Friday. Nikitchyuk’s son survived the shooting after a teacher pulled him out of the hallway and barricaded the door to her classroom.

“I would offer the NRA: Return this country their kids,” Nikitchyuk told reporters after the press conference. “If they can do it, I would like that very, very much.”

Nikitchyuk, who emigrated to the United States 22 years ago, said he tried to ignore past mass shootings, and said he believed gun owners and politicians would do anything they could to protect children. Now, Nikitchyuk said, the country needs to speak up and demand more gun control.

“It’s saying the only answer to violence is more violence..."

When the bad guy is dead after his first shot, that's less violence.

The Brady bunch are the insane ones.
They're Klingons - that's all there is to it.

I’m sure the Democrats and Teachers Unions all agree it’s much better for a Teacher to be “Well Trained” (as I keep hearing on TV) in a Emergency plan that involves cowering in a classroom waiting to be gunned down....than a plan to shelter the kids...grab some cover....and put a couple of rounds through the Psycho’s head.

I don’t think any of the forty people for the Brady Commission is qualified to characterize anybody insane. SThe problem we are dealing with - Virginia Tech, Aurora, Sandy Hook - involves people who actually are insane.

I guess it’s “insane” for cops to carry firearms as well.

“Hi folks. Just get in the box car.” Brady thinkers: “Oh boy. A special trip just for us?” They would board rather than put up a fuss and try to defend themselves. When seconds count the cops are only 20 minutes away. How many SS guys were standing around Reagan and Jim when Hinckley got off 6 shots? Didn’t seem to help that time either. Outlaw insanity. That’s the ticket.

Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

The Brady Campaign is stained with the blood of the Sandy Hook Massacre.

Shame on them for causing the victims to be unable to defend themselves!

Disarming teachers ... compelling those who operate schools (whether government or private) to operate as defenseless free-fire zones for criminals ...

THAT is insane.

As was said on a previous thread. We have armed guards at airports, banks and court houses. But not for our kids?

I would trust my wife and teacher with a gun. Daughter of a COP, she knows more about guns than most. I would want her to use a ring safety devise.

How many of these mass shooting were in gun-free zones? My guess is most of them. The Brady Bunch had their wish in that case. No guns at all. Look what happened.

The dirty little secret is, the Brady Bunch enjoys these mass shooting incidents.

Went to Walmart to check on a Ruger Mini-14. They sold the only one they had but the clerk said more were on order. At least they weren’t being a Dick (sporting goods).

We need a high-capacity gun-free zone ban.

If Teachers can not be trusted with a specific type of tool, then this statement is an admission that these same teachers can not be trusted with children!

So, Mr. Gross, I ask you. Is the answer to dealing with someone who is armed and bent on killing as many innocent people as possible, to disarm the people so that the perpetrator can inflict mass casualities with impunity? You believe the answer for less violence is to do nothing to stop the shooter? You believe that implementing a new ban on future sales of firearms will result in the next person who wants to inflict such carnage to decide not to because there is a new law?

Mr. Gross, THAT is insane!
