At the police station, dispatchers began to take calls from inside the school. Authorities say the first emergency call about the shooting came in at "approximately" 9:30 a.m.
"Sandy Hook school. Caller is indicating she thinks someone is shooting in the building," a dispatcher told fire and medical personnel, according to 911 tapes.
Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls.
Police report that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at any point.
The gunman took his own life, police said. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached, officials said.

Exactly, when seconds count the police are only 20 minutes away.
20 minutes is an eternity when gunmen are preying on unarmed children and adults.
To: marktwain
The whole thing just boggles the mind.
As does the fact that other than there being a shooting at the school, EVERYTHING the news media reported was wrong.

I think there is something wrong with the time line. This was a small town; it should not have (and I doubt) took 20 minutes. If it took 20 minutes, he would have gotten way more than the 26 children and teachers who did die.

20 minutes? Why? What took them so long? Unacceptable. In such a situation, 20 minutes is an eternity. All the more reason to allow teachers to conceal and carry in the schools! In fact, the training should be required.

If the state creates gun free zones then it has an obligation to provide armed guards. We do this in courts, airports and legislative buildings and other gun free zones but we don’t do it for our children.

If you are ever in a situation where your life depends on it and you have to make that call, say this "Officer down!" They'll be there in a hurry.

Indeed. The state should be liable. If a company bans them on premises it should be liable for shootings as well. They’re demanding everyone go into a place that is a target. Well...

"20 minutes after the first calls"
Damn slow.

Hochsprung heard loud pops. She, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and vice principal Natalie Hammond went out to investigate. Only Hammond returned from the hallway alive. She was wounded. Rest in peace, but you simply don't investigate gunfire without a gun. These 'liberal' rules didn't even let them take a knife to a gunfight.
Idiots. One armed and motivated teacher, or guard at the door could have prevented this.

This is true to the power of 100.
It’s truthiness is unchallengable and should be considered scientific law.

How far is it from school to police station?
To firehouse?
And why would first responders even GO if they're just going to stand around?
Just a couple of questions I have

The kids were told to run to the firehouse. I doubt it was that far away.

So, what about the second man dressed in black who was arrested in the woods behind the school according to the early stories? The same one who multiple sources quoted as saying "I didn't do it." How does he fit in? Or did he in fact not exist?
It is hard to know for sure.

According to MapQuest the Newtown Police Station (3 Main St, Newtown, CT 06470) is 5 mins / 2.15 miles from the school (Sandy Hook School, 12 Dickenson Dr, Sandy Hook, CT 06482).

The kids were told to run to the firehouse. I doubt it was that far away. Supposedly it was right across the street.
Wonder if it was a volunteer type fire department with nobody on duty?
If it was actually a 20 minute response time, that's way too long for the cops in a small town to get there.

"Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls." Nice.
Good thing the school was a Gun Free Zone. That way, these poor people had no chance of protecting themselves from a gunman.
