When 25-year-old Hayden Carlo was pulled over for an expired registration sticker by a Plano police officer, he told him without hesitation he had no excuse.
I said theres no explanation for why I havent done it, except I dont have the money .it was either feed my kids or get my registration done. The cop gave Carlo a ticket and something else.
I opened it up and theres a 100 dollar bill. I broke down in my car what else could I do?, Carlo told CBS DFW.
The officer never told anyone about the $100 gift. But Carlos grandfather, Billy McIntire, was so moved by the kind gesture he wrote a letter to the department.
I get emotional when we talk about this type of thing, McIntire says. You just dont find that many officers who would do this type of thing. We write about a lot of bad news. Its good to offer something uplifting along with it, especially in this Advent season.

Bravo. Just goes to show that there’s still hope for our nation.
I’d call that a -$100 ticket.
And I hope the Cop doesn’t get in trouble for it.
He won’t. As long as the $100 didn’t go the other way
Great act of kindness. Did Carlo use it to pay for the registration?
Cop probably got it from a hooker or something.
The cop can do what he wants with his money. I don’t care. It was a nice thing to do. He shouldnt get in trouble for it.
I would hope that he’d used it for his registration. Most places will throw the ticket out if it gets corrected before the court date for this type of infraction.
According to our local news, he used it to pay for his registration and the registration for his wife’s car. Nice story.
Agreed. Hopefully Carlo did so, as Collin County inspection costs only $39.30. As a result, thanks to this police officer, Carlo has the opportunity to do both - pay for his inspection and provide some food for the kiddos.
Have to say I’m shocked this came from a Plano officer... especially given that they are out in droves every Sunday morning waiting for speeders late for or on the way to church.
You have to get your cars inspected every year? Is that in addition to your license plate renewal?
HA! Not Florida. I was ONE WEEK late on my registration (expired mid-September, I still had a September sticker on, it was just expired by a week) and the friendly FHP officer that ran my plates at a red light gave me a $110 ticket. I got to "plead it down" for a discount to $95. For a registration that cost me about $100.
Oh, and I had the pleasure of paying another $10 on top of it because my insurance card was out of date.
Gotta love the highway patrol...
Yes; I needed that story...
Heh, gotta love the inspection states. So glad to have left NY. I have a friend back home who is now forced to look for a new vehicle, because his post-1996 vehicle won't pass emissions tests in NY.
Not because it's polluting. But because it has a 'check engine' light on, which means the state automatically fails it when hooking it up to their machine. And fixing it would cost about what the car is worth. Back in the old days, you'd have a mechanic 'friend' who would charge you double for an inspection sticker. Now, it's all computerized, with a machine that communicates directly with Albany. No cheating now.
Nanny states for you.
That jackbooted thug!
In Ohio, they started fining us if we don’t renew your registration before it expires.
Doesn’t matter if you drove the car during that time or not.
There’s no logic to this - just the usual revenue enhancement.
I found out about it (besides it being written on the renewal notice) because I was working on a car in my garage for several months. My birthday came and went and, since it was an emissions testing year and I couldn’t drive it, I couldn’t get it emissions tested, so couldn’t renew the registration. No biggie - so I thought.
On top of having to get a 30 day tag so I could drive it the grand total of .5 miles to the inspection station and back, I had to pay the fine for not renewing the registration, even though it wasn’t on the road, and wasn’t driveable.

Mercy from a Plano police officr. Quite a rare thing.
Does that mean uninsured?
I had a vacuum leak in the filler pipe that set a code. Changing the filler looked to be a nuisance.
Code reader on EBay, $50.
Cleared the code a couple of times, got the sticker, and fixed the filler when the weather was nicer.
It's easy.
My BIL was down last week. SAME CODE!
He has borrowed the code reader.
things are different though if its a pre computer car - like a classic or hot rod - you can still find a friendly mechanic here and there
