Time for New Car Golf TDI? Freeper Input Appreciated!
12.12.12 | Chickensoup

Posted on 12/12/2012 6:02:23 PM PST by Chickensoup

Time for another motor in the house. Last vehicle I bought I ran by the Freeper Auto-Guys and it worked great. Time for a different kind of transportation.

Looking at a new two or four door Golf TDI in Red with manual transmission. No sunroof, no nav package.

Test drove it twice and like the manual transmission. Dealer giving 300K warranty with serviceing Q10K at dealership. Your thoughts.

Around 2007, I went to The Netherlands and Belgium for a week or so. I had a rented Golf II Tdi. I think it was a four door. I got a consistent 44 mpg combined freeway/highway and Medieval towns, like Bruge. Ran like a top. I was raving about it for weeks after, but living in California, diesel is evil, so until recently, you couldn't buy a Tdi here.

If they are giving a 300K warranty - it's a no brainer.

Per the poster with the failed timing belt - make sure the warranty covers that and the engine.

The DEF urea (aka “cow piss” to industry insiders) is about 12 bucks a gallon at WM. Similar to motor oil prices.

On big rigs it is consumed at about 2% rate of the diesel fuel consumed. Not sure about the VW.

VW/Audi has won the 24 Hours of LeMans almost every time in the last ten years, usually with TDI technology.

In Europe about 50% of new passenger vehicles are diesels.

That ain’t the case for Chebby Volt American technology.

I would look at a Prius in comparison to the diesel VWs.

Everything is TDI overseas, I really wanted a subaru TDI like is sold in England. But our air standards are too high and they cannot be sold here.

Get a deal on a mint condition older model that you like (electronics) and have your VW guru put a new TDI engine in it.

Besides I understand that Prius owners are least likely to buy another Prius. I wonder why?

The USEPA is very anti-diesel.

They made the standards so rigorous they pretty much forced the manufacturers to kill most of the diesel efficiency advantage over gas.

Factor in the cost penalty for diesel fuel, likely higher maintenance and repair costs, and the "regulators" have pretty much succeeded.

I bought a 2dr 2012 Golf TDI a few months ago. I’ve owned diesels for the past thirty years and this is my fifth VW diesel.

They hold their value very well so I think it makes much more sense to buy a new one, especially if you plan on holding on to it for a while.

Mine is also a manual which I would much rather have over the DSG transmission.

I enjoy it. Drives nice. Great torque. Best mpg so far is 44. I’m sure I can get near 50 if I would only drive 55 but just can’t do that :)

How much does it cost to install an engine?

HI cs...

FOUR DOOR ONLY! Don't make that mistake! LOL

The TDI (turbocharged direct injection) is a very good choice. It isn't as 'quick off the line' as the gas version, but it's more thrifty!

Yes, get an auto-transmission, if they really have one to offer.

I think they offer a DSG 'automatic' transmission (Direct Shift Gearbox) - that is NOT fully automatic, but it adds more fuel economy. Make sure that you drive that 'DSG' equipped buggy all over town, highway, hills, to make sure it doesn't drive you absolutely crazy!

Good luck and happy driving! 8^)

Well, if VW does it...it costs a fortune. If a local VW freak does it as a labor of love....it would be reasonable.

You need to ask around and find a reputable and competent fellow. I can't help you with that, but they're everywhere.

Well - ignore my last on the DSG version. I see you like the manual. (I wouldn't where I have to drive - way too much shifting! LOL)

But I still wonder if the DSG (really a manual tranny) isn't something you should check out. Yeah, it adds price though.
