Time for another motor in the house. Last vehicle I bought I ran by the Freeper Auto-Guys and it worked great. Time for a different kind of transportation.
Looking at a new two or four door Golf TDI in Red with manual transmission. No sunroof, no nav package.
Test drove it twice and like the manual transmission. Dealer giving 300K warranty with serviceing Q10K at dealership. Your thoughts.

I think so, I will put a chunk down. It is more expensive that the other cars that look like it.
I originally thought of the two door, but the more I look at it I think that I put things in the back seat quite a bit in the Xterra.
I signed up on “Fred’s TDI” page at “tdiclub.com” many years ago, just to get information on the TDI Passat. I think you should at least visit there to learn more. The users even have a big in-person shindig every so often, not too unlike what Saturn or Harley owners do, minus the factory.
Fred’s own goal was to get a TDI Golf when they eventually came out. He also expected to marry his girlfriend, it appeared, at the time.
I think he only successfully got his Golf. :-)
TDIs are a solid choice, but beware the loss of oil between changes that seems to happen for some.
I plan on driving it for years and years and years.
I dont like the level of electronics on the car, though.

If I could manage car-guts, I wouldnt be buying this car. I would be buying an 1986 SAAB.
If you drive a great deal over longer distances, that is the argument in favor of it. Even with the higher price per gallon it pays out.
You'll want to research reliability as well as repair costs. Look very closely at the warranty to make sure you understand exactly what is covered and what expectations are upon you as far as maintaining warranty coverage. Keep records of all routine maintenance and don't blow past the recommended service intervals, if you want to be sure a costly repair will be covered with no arguments.
They're fairly expensive to repair, is my impression. The urea in the emission control system has to be replaced periodically and can be expensive too, I understand. At least it was when I last looked into it, I was interested in a Jetta TDI wagon a little over two years ago.
Not trying to scare you off, just want to make certain you go into it knowing what's what.
What sort of deal are you getting on price, If I might ask?
I have an Audi TDI and love it. You can’t go wrong with diesel.
I liked my 2004 TDI a lot . . . right up until it ate some teeth of a cam belt, jumped time and ate a valve. All at 148000 miles. Leather heated seats, nice tires, good shape, all became junkyard trash in an instant. The cost of repairing it outweighed any benefit. It will be parted out or crushed this spring.
BTW, car was well maintained. The cam belt had been changed as recommended about 20K before. No indications of trouble until it stopped suddenly.

It was a Golf? Wow. Lousy installation?
Sounds a little steep. That’s the price I was looking at for a Jetta TDI wagon with leather and panoramic sunroof two years ago. It wasn’t brand new but almost new, 6k miles and current model year.
Shop around on Autotrader.com or similar for an equivalent car and see what pops up. You can search the whole country if you want.
Lowest was 23K and it was far far away
That is one reason I am looking at the golf. I want a car that gets milage.
You may be right, quick search turned up one 2012 with less than 10k miles, pretty loaded up with the exception of leather and sunroof, price just shy of $22k. Black over black, located in Warwick, Rhode Island. Dealership is Balise Volkswagen.

Get a deal on a mint condition older model that you like (electronics) and have your VW guru put a new TDI engine in it.
Maybe you could get lucky and find one with a bad engine for a song.
