Got a cold? Treat yourself to a cold one.
A new study, reports Agence France-Presse, suggests that a chemical compound in beer can help the human body fight the virus behind the common cold.
Of course, there are some important caveats. First, the study was conducted and published by Sapporo Breweries, a Japanese beer manufacturer, through its Sapporo Medical University. And secondly, an adult would have to drink about 30 cans of beer to get enough humulone, the compound said to have anti-viral properties.
The humulone found in hops, one of beer's three main ingredients, gives the alcoholic drink its signature bitter taste.
Still, if the research holds up under scrutiny, the extraction of humulone could have potential medical benefits. As AFP reports, scientists at the university said the compound was effective in curbing the respiratory syncytial virus.

Reminder to print article for the next cold.
and beer has food value, but food has absolutely NO beer value!
At least temporarily.
“...30 cans of beer to get enough humulone”
I have no doubts that with this amount a cold would be a distant memory, although another orifice may be prone to pick up the runny part.
I'll take that as a personal challenge!
No wonder I never had a cold when I was in college.
And your point is???
Hops tea is a centuries old treatment for colds. It was used in Europe before Christopher Columbus found America.
You just need to drink an Imperial IPA and you will get a lot of humulone. Remember, hops are a preservative. It’s why the British put all the hops in the beer they shipped to India and thus IPA = India Pale Ale.
On a separate note... the Japanese and Budweiser can keep all their rice beer. Rice when added as an adjunct contributes to different phenolic compounds that always give me a headache!
24 hours in a day, 24 bottles of beer in a case. coincidence.... I don’t think so!!!
30 cans? What’s the problem?
How much would it take to cure Helen Thomas level ugliness? I think one would die of alcohol poisoning even with low alcohol content beer before you ever got to that point.
Unfortunately, it only cures ugliness in other people, providing they are female.
“And secondly, an adult would have to drink about 30 cans of beer to get enough humulone, the compound said to have anti-viral properties.”
So, what’s the downside here?
For that particular problem, beer is not going to do it, that’s when you need whiskey.
Christopher Columbus didn’t “find” America. There is ample evidence that the Vikings and Chinese were here many hundreds of years earlier.
Thank you, Mr. Literal.
Sounds like something Hillary! would like very much.
