NEW YORK – “Storage Wars” may have a real war brewing with one of its stars.

Dave Hester , one of the show’s cast members, has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the show, according to RadarOnline.

In his lawsuit, Hester is claiming the series is fake, and he says when he made complaints to the network about the staged portions of the show he was fired, Radar reported.

...where do people who own and operate secondhand stores get their merchandise?

Based on just my own experience, I think most of the secondhand store stuff is donated. The very few times I found anything in an abandoned storage unit that was worth anything, the (facility) owner would donate it to Habitat for Humanity.

Like it makes sense to abandon a storage locker with $8000 worth of equipment ...

The only time I could see something like this happening is if the renter dies, and the stuff in the storage unit is unbeknownst to the estate.

” And apparently one of the dumbest.”

Not so sure about that. He knew from the very beginning it was fake. They were getting him to take items from his shop and “salt” the lockers. After a short time, he refused to do that. Then he became worried about his and other cast members vulnerability to legal problems. Meetings were held between cast and producers. When he asked to be indemnified against any lawsuits, and pushed, they let him go. And,,,, I wouldn’t judge his intelligence by the character he played on the show either. Everything was scripted, even the bidding, which wasn’t real. He did make a lot of money.

I watch this show occasionally, and he (Hester)wins almost every week, by artifically inflating the worth of the junk he yanks out these lockers.

In any case Barry is the only reason to watch the show. His self inflicted panning humor is pretty good sometimes.

I have to admit, when I see one of the experts value an item at, say $5000, and then the seller is offered $400 for it, I almost throw something at the TV. Not because the Pawn Star guys are lowballing them (I’d *expect* them to do that), but because nine times out of ten, the idiot takes the offer after only a minimal amount of haggling.

I don’t care how much I needed money right now, I’d invest an afternoon in searching the internet to find a dealer or collector to deal with directly - you know that’s what the Pawn Star guys are going to.

Hester is or was a millionaire and he’s ticked off at the show because of all the new people getting into the business of buying storage lockers. He’s closed down two of his resale stores last year and probably bitter at all the people he sees taking away his business.

I managed a facility in the Sarasota area and we had quarterly auctions there also. Had our ‘regular’ buyers who did buy most of the units because they had second-hand stores to peddle the merchandise. One guy alone probably bought 80% of our units each auction - had a big store to fill.

As for valuables? A fellow manager watched a unit sold that contained in his estimation $5,000 in guns. He’s an FFL and just stood there with his mouth hanging open. Not allowed by company policy to bid. No idea the guns were buried under boxes of crap.

We sold a unit that appeared to have nothing in it. One drawer had a bag of coins in it. The buyer found three other bags. Apparently the person who rented the unit threw their coins in something instead of carrying them around like I do. I cash mine in every now and then. Unfortunately this person died and left theirs behind. The unit was purchased for $50 and the buyer found close to $800 in coins in there.

I also know of a unit in my old facility that is owned by a retired physicist who lives in Sarasota. The guy has gone a little ‘crazy’. Thinks the government and police are out to get him. So, he fit right in with me and we bonded immediately! His unit is filled with valuables - he showed them to me when we set ‘traps’ to see if anyone was messing with his stuff. No family, when he dies that unit is going to be worth a small fortune.

Interesting note on his ‘craziness’ too. He worked his entire life for one of the alphabet agencies doing stuff he can’t talk about (assuming he remembers it) so I always wondered if he knew what he was talking about re: the government from firsthand knowledge and experience. He talked about surveillance equipment that I’d never heard of and some I did. Guy had me believing!

” I did not like the fact that he stated he would never deal with any guns whatsoever, I presume this means collectables as well.”

Maybe with good reason. Maybe he has some sort of record? The guy who took his place was busted because he had a record, and was still on probation. Cops pulled him over when he had a truckload of stuff from some lockers. They found a gun in amongst all the junk. He ended up doing 45 days.

There are purported mugshots of Brandi out there ... rumor is that she previously worked as a stripper..

Her husband was supposedly a porn actor so not surprising if she was a stripper.

The basics of Duck Dynasty are true. The episodes are staged but loosely based on reality. Big deal! It’s my favorite “new” show!

Besides I am so jealous of the beards!

I just saw an interesting video with Brandi and Jarryd about what it’s really like in that business. Jarryd says basically it’s a lot of hard work to make a few bucks. He said it’s better to buy more than one unit (they will buy five at one location if possible) because you increase your odds of finding the one locker that has valuable merchandise. And it’s extremely hard work. They said every day is like moving day, and it takes all day to clean out those lockers. Then a lot of stuff has to be taken to the dump, because most of the stuff they find is not worth much of anything.

The two guys on Auction Hunters openly admit they only discuss the units that have something cool. According to the lead-in, they go through hundred of units each year to make a living at it. Better show, too.

The only things about reality shows that are real are 1) no written script, and 2) no professional actors.

During the Hollywood writers strike a couple of years ago the writers for reality shows wanted the same pay as other writers. I assume that means that they do actually have scripts. Probably not all the dialogue is written out though.
