WEST JORDAN What appeared to be a fight between a couple turned into a much more serious shooting after an armed neighbor apparently tried to intervene.
Police say a they were called to the shooting at about 1 a.m. A man was arguing with his girlfriend in a car just outside the Woodgate apartment complex at 3581 W. Cobble Ridge Drive.
As the argument got more heated, a man walking his dog passed by, saw the argument, and asked the female if she needed help, according to West Jordan officer J.C. Holt.
An ensuing argument between the two men quickly turned into a fight.
"It was apparent that there was quite a physical altercation between these two," Holt said.
The man walking his dog was armed with a handgun, and at some point during the fight the gun "came into play" and discharged, striking the other man in the hip, according to Holt. He said that the bullet just missed the femoral artery.

you never get involved in domestic fights.
this guy had really no idea exactly what was going on. he isn’t a police officer and has no immunity if someone lies to him or he decides to make a decision based on really knowing nothing about the situation.
assumptions will get you thrown in jail for felony assault and possibly manslaughter or murder-2.
Chivalry lives.
I think you are kidding.
Unless he was killing his girlfriend, and needed to be shot, mind your own business or call the police.
Been there.
At the time, was living in an apartment with girlfriend. Late in the evening, heard one heck of a ruckus from what seemed down in the parking lot (we were 2nd floor). We looked out....saw this car up on the main street between two medians....quite the quarrel going on. He was getting physical (obviously two blacks). I wasn’t going to let that pass. I walked down.....approached the car. Remember, this was the dead of night. I approached the driver side of the car and inquired of the young black lady (who was in the driver’s seat) if she was ok. That is all I wanted to know, period.....not looking for a fight.
Let’s just say home boy called me everything but white from the passenger seat....started to get out of the car to “kick my white ass”....and his girlfriend had the presence of mind to gun the car and pull him back in as she sped away to avoid what she knew was going to get ugly. I wasn’t packing......then; my girlfriend was. Know that what brought me out wasn’t the noise of her/him alone....he was getting physical. I don’t stand by and let that happen, no matter what.
Four cop cars arrived (girlfriend called 911). I told them what happened. They thanked me, scattered to the four winds to find this black a**hole quicker than you can say “...fresh batch of Dunkin’ Donuts on the shelf!”. God bless ‘em.
Got my ass chewed by girlfriend afterward. She knew she would cover my six, with a Glock 23 .40 cal....and was on her way when they sped off.
Emotions run high in lover’s quarrels, so you always have to be very, very careful. I just wanted to ensure the young lady was ok......that’s all. No hero, etc......but no Kitty Genovese in my neighborhood.
Proverbs 26:17 Like one who takes a dog by the ears Is he who passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him.
Took in a woman looking for a place to stay, once. I was married at the time, decades ago. The boyfriend showed up, used a nasty tool to flatten two tires on her car. I had a .357 and decided that if he forced his way in, I would shoot him.
My wife and I knew them both. Later, I was told that one reason he did not come in was that he knew I had at least one gun, and some training. (I was assigned game warden duties as an extra duty at the time. We supplied our own guns.)
Later on, they made up and married. I said good riddance to both.
!
You are correct. I caution against it in my classes. One of the real dangers is that couples can be very protective of each other and often will lie after the fact.
I would probably intervene if I thought a life was in danger, so never is a bit too strong for me.
Wonderful tagline.
40 some odd years ago (in a bar) I overpowered some feller who was slapping his girl around and while in this process, the girl hits me over the head with a beer mug. Go figure.
Sounds like a keeper. Sounds like you didn’t.
Can you tell us?
Not uncommon. Lots of police will tell you many simular sad tales.
never shot a guy roughing up a woman. did give one a pretty good dose of pepper spray though. he was too big for me to tangle with.
DH would have done the exact same thing — Southern Gentlemen from South Carolina - we have a 21-year old daughter and that’s what he would have seen, someone’s daughter.
BUT, we walk with a pit bull/police dog mix and DH is ALWAYS armed.
That proverb popped into my mind when i saw the title. True words of wisdom.
Not good advice whether you are talking about couples or civil wars in Muslim countries. Great advice!
Way too many times if it is a couple no matter how bad it gets from the other partner the other one sticks up for them.
Unless one personally knows what is going on I would not get involved. I would not intervene with out the power of the uniform to back me up.
With that one has the option of throwing both of them in jail if needed it has been done many times.
When you get involved in a domestic dispute, 9 times out of 10 they will both turn on you.
Women who go with a-holes like this usually know what is coming.
Most times a violent argument is not the first they hjave had, If she goes back for more after the first time I say Shame on her. She is on her own.
again you may not know the reasons behind it, they may be defending themselves too.
