Latest hell for ex-U.S. Marine: Chained to bed in Mexican jail
McClatchey Newspapers ^ | Dec. 6, 2012 | Tim Johnson

MEXICO CITY — As a U.S. Marine, Jon Hammar endured nightmarish tension patrolling the war-ravaged streets of Iraq’s Fallujah. When he came home, the brutality of war still pinging around his brain, mental peace proved elusive.

Surfing provided the only respite.

“The only time Hammar is not losing his mind is when he’s on the water,” said a fellow Marine veteran, Ian McDonough.

snip--- But Mexican prosecutors who looked at the disassembled relic in the 1972 Winnebago motor home dismissed the U.S. registration papers Hammar had filled out. They charged him with a serious crime: possession of a weapon restricted for use to Mexico’s armed forces

When is the treatment of American citizens in Mexico and their rights vs US treatment of Mexicans going to be an issue when we discuss amnesty ?

Ever hear of reciprocal aggrements ? These are arranged to protect the rights of American citizens working or living in other countries.

Why is it when it comes to citizens of other countries we are required to offer them the same privledges as we do to US citizens? But when it comes to US citizens who get in trouble or attempt to do business in other countries they do not get the same treatment their citizens get.

Americans can’t own coast land in Mexico. And get no title to it elsewhere. If they run out of cash they’ll get unceremoniously sent back or put in jail untill some relative comes up with the “fresh”. That’s just for starters as for granting them voting privledges yea let’s give Mexican citizens that right when American citizens vote in their elections .

I feel for this guy. But he broke the law in mexico. The fact he’s a former US Marine who served in iraq carries zero weight in another country (it practically carries no weight here!).

At this point it may be too late to pay a bribe.

It is not a bad idea to carry a few hundred bucks on you while in Mexico and $1000 should get you out of most problems at the onset of an issue with the police.

But when you enter Mexico, they will offer search your vehicle and they are looking for guns.

The Second Amendment does not apply south of the border.

Bill RIchardson? He loves being in the news and he goes to Korea a lot. I doubt he’d worry about a trip to his homeland if he got some press out of it.

To those who say the Marine should have known better.....it was an antique gun that most likely would have “passed” the measurement standard if the militants weren’t so greedy. Too bad he didn’t have a couple of hundred to get that bribe done.

I am an American of Mexican Ancestry and every 2 years my family and I would go down to Mexico City to visit my father’s family. We would drive down there. I recall my father being stopped by a police and I vividly remember my father “paying” him and the officer just went back to his patrol car. Being a child then I for some reason knew it was a “Payoff”. Then there was another incident with the immigration. We were traveling on the coastal side of Mexico so we had to pass Tijuana. Every mile or so there were like Custom office that looked like a small house. Well there were some that were empty but we came across one that had 3 Mexican agents. They came out and inspected our car and my mother & father (both RIP) stood watching them. My mother then asked “what are you looking for?”. This fat agent stated they are looking for a gun. My mother said “What! your looking for a gun in that small hole (where the passenger door handle was) then they went and open the back trunk and took everything out including our suitcases and opened them up and dragged out clothes onto the dirt. My mother got so pissed she went after the fat agent and told him off and order him to put everything back. So all 3 agents placed everything back.

Now I for one WILL NOT ever return to Mexico. It is so corrupt that is why my father never wanted to work for the Mexican government. My father had so many opportunities to get a government job from the high position but he gave it up and came to the US and worked as a farm worker when he could be living a comfortable life in Mexico. My father knew the whose whose in Mexico and that was thru my grandfather. My father was a man who rather struggle and keep his integrity than to accept a cushy job and become like them.

As for this soldier, I am sorry that he wanted to do this now he is learning the hard way. American people must remember that the US Constitution does not follow you around the world.

Back in the early 70’s the Marines at camp Pendleton did just that after one of their Men was locked up on a bogus charge in TJ, they went down there 300 strong FULLY ARMED and removed him from their jail and brought him back home, and there was not even a peep from the Meican Government or any Government Official from either side of the tortilla.

I’m not trying to be facetious, but you can buy travel insurance with an extortion rider for these situations.

There also exists executive insurance plans. If you get spirited away by kidnappers or government officials, that insurance company will send an armed commando team to get you.

I have to question the mental well being of this guy. Mexico is in the middle of a war. 50k+ dead. Beheadings in the streets. Gun battles in center of major cities. He should have read up on the laws of Mexico. Thanks for your service but being an Ex-Marine does not excuse you from reading up on what you can and can not do in a foreign country.
