South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will replace Ed Feulner as president of the Heritage Foundation. Mr. DeMint will leave his post as South Carolina's junior senator in early January to take control of the Washington think tank, which has an annual budget of about $80 million.
Sen. DeMint's departure means that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, will name a successor, who will have to run in a special election in 2014. In that year, both Mr. DeMint's replacement and Sen. Lindsey Graham will be running for reelection in South Carolina.

I was hoping Trey would primary “Lightshoes Lindsey”.
I think: “Jim DeMint, Chairman of the RNC” sounds good.
Boner in the House made it clear conservatives, esp tea party, no longer welcome in the party.
Good luck with that, GOP and GOP Leaders.
Being that the Heritage Foundation is a non profit organization - doesn’t this take him out of supporting political candidates while he is there ?
Senator DeMint has had it. This may be the first step toward a new Conservative party. I have been especially watching his actions in this regard. Heritage is a good place to land for planning. Don’t you think?

“DeMint has made it known in Columbia that he wants Tim Scott to be appointed to his seat, sources tell CNN”
Great analysis. We need to step back and take it from the outside, one step at a time. Congress is too polluted and Demint’s influence is served better from a vantage point like the Heritage Foundation. As hard as his leaving is, I believe this could be a good move.
Haley better not appoint a placeholder who won’t run in the special, that would lead to anyone thinking of running against Graham to run in the special instead.
NOOOOO!!!!!!
The RINOs are running the Conservatives out. It’s time for a new Party.
F the eGOP!
Breaking News: This Just in Nikki Haley has decided on who will succeed Sen. DeMint....... ALVIN GREENE! LOL JUST KIDDING guys.(Take a breath) I though everyone could use a laugh on what is a serious and slightly depressing thread...
Wonder if he was asked to leave.
I've been very impressed with Trey Gowdy. But I was hoping he would toss Linda out into the street.
Now we need two staunch Conservatives from South Carolina. Tim Scott maybe?
Wow, what happened to her poll numbers? I was under the impression she was well loved in SC, and that she was doing a great job and had high poll numbers. (Shows what I know about SC politics)
Would a democRAT actually have a good chance against Nikki in 2014 in such a Red state like SC? Yikes...
Jim DeMint Ping! |
Follow Sen. DeMint on Twitter.
I suspect Jim just got tired of the endless, silly, stupid BS. Who can blame him? He will be sorely missed.
SC is one of the top states my husband and I are considering moving to "someday". I'm *really* hoping South Carolina stays RED! ;-)
Jim DeMint’s departure is an ominous sign for the GOP, which needs DeMint more than DeMint needs his Senate position. He has served his constituents well during his tenure.
Love Tim Scott! (We’ve also looked a bit around his district a year or two ago... we like what we saw in Mt. Pleasant)
My only problem with Jim DeMint was his support for Mitt Romney in, both, ‘08 and ‘12.
