A WGN TV report by Mark Suppelsa now raises serious doubts about Mayor Emanuel’s decision to award the O’Hare cleaning contract to United Maintenance. "In light of this report, we call on Attorney General Lisa Madigan to start an investigation into United Maintenance and this key public contract. We call on the City of Chicago to rebid the contract and choose a responsible bidder that will protect good jobs at O’Hare airport," said SEIU Local 1 Secretary-Treasurer Laura Garza.
More than 300 janitors at O’Hare airport may lose their jobs right before Christmas this year because Mayor Rahm Emanuel awarded a key public contract to a cleaning contractor with a history of not only undercutting good jobs, but now the issue has been raised of mob ties of the owner of the firm.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently applauded President Obama for “building on the middle class and not short-changing them like Mitt Romney would do.” But unfortunately, short-changing workers is exactly what Emanuel is doing right here in Chicago.
Since Mayor Emanuel took office, he has eliminated many good jobs and outsourced others to companies that pay lower wages and benefits. Now more than 300 janitors and window washers at O'Hare International Airport are at risk of losing their jobs just days before Christmas this year because Mayor Emanuel is replacing their employer with United Maintenance, a company with a history of undercutting good jobs. Jobs that are now full time and family-sustaining may become part time poverty jobs and hundreds of families may be forced onto taxpayer-funded assistance programs.
Chicago already has the third highest poverty rate, the second highest foreclosure rate, and the highest level of racial income disparity of any city in the country. Despite working harder than ever, average Chicagoans are not seeing the fruits of their labor and Mayor Emanuel is making the situation even worse. He’s making it possible for millionaires and profitable corporations to help themselves to even bigger profits at the expense of good middle class jobs for everybody else.
This is not good public policy for the City of Chicago, and it’s not what constituents expect from a Mayor of the City that works. If we hope to restore the balance to our economy and vitality to our neighborhoods, Mayor Emanuel needs to support good jobs that can sustain families—not corporations that exploit hard-working people for profit.
Investigate the company, but not the city officials who were involved. That’s the media ‘s idea of root cause analysis. What a rotten system.

Should have started genuine independent government investigations at every level of government, decades ago. The unions came to power because they paid off big gov mobsters who bankrolled their campaigns, and provided the well connected with kickbacks, power, cash and prizes.
Americans were fast asleep during good times in the 50s, 60s and 70s. What we have today is the result.
Emanuel “seems” to be running the city as a fiscal conservative.

The mob connection has some irony to it. The airport is named as most know for WW2 Ace Butch O’Hare. O’Hare’s dad was one of Capone’s accountants who testified against him in the income tax evasion case. He was gunned down later at the order of Capone’s #1 Frank Nitti.
Looking on the photo at the article, you see marchers with a purple banner for SEIU Local 1. There are two words below the top line, one in Spanish (Justicia) and one in Polish (Sprawiedliwosc) both translate to “Justice” in English. So
Local 73 from their website: “SEIU Local 73 represents more than 27,000 workers, primarily in public service and publicly funded positions in school districts, municipalities, social service agencies, and many other job classifications. “
So, this is connected to the public schools and many other municipality type cleaning contracts they already hold— and they are the real local Local.
Local 1’s website is the US wide “Local” located in several States (Illinois being one of them).
From the article, mayor’s office proudly states they let SEIU Local 73 the contract for outer support buildings in the airport and United got the “inside the terminal” type cleaning (more area- contracts let per square foot carpet, bathrooms public areas at gates, lucrative, higher kickback).
So this is the STATE “Local” of a National “Local” Local 1 complaining that the other Local got a contract and that the State one didn’t get the most lucrative one.
Two different kinds Locals of SEIU thugs fighting it out for contract, and one making with fists vs. a probable mob front. They of course would be nationally aligned with some OTHER mob family (maybe?) who wants this action (opportunity for theft of secure spaces, etc.) This could get nasty but business as usual in the thug city.
Had some thoughts and memories from history. Chicago Mayor Cermak was killed in Miami at a speaking date there with FDR.
By one Giuseppe Zangara who said at his trial:”I kill kings and presidents first and next all capitalists.” leading some to think he was aiming for FDR. But Cermak got hit. Later, rumors circulated that Cermak, not Roosevelt, had been the intended target, as his promise to clean up Chicago’s rampant lawlessness posed a threat to Al Capone and the Chicago Capone dominated mob. Cermak was Czech born.
What brought this to mind (besides Blagojevich, who is Bosnian Serb ancestry)is that FDR always held that public employees should NEVER be unionized (not police, certainly not public janitors SEIU, and NEVER any Federal employee- there is a union for IRS agents!!) that this is contrary to the Constitution (It also would have meant that FDR couldn’t hand out as many patronage jobs personally if there were unions in charge, to be realistic about FDR).
Nice place, Chicago-— it was simpler back when, but is really a chess board of ethnic wards, corrupt as hell.
