A road tunnel has collapsed in Japan, trapping a number of vehicles, Japanese media reports say.
The incident happened at about 08:00 local time (23:00 GMT Saturday) in the Sasago tunnel, about 80km (50 miles) west of the capital Tokyo.

Shame on you.
Now they are saying there may be five people trapped.
This is on a major expressway going west from Tokyo. One injured woman escaped, but the rescue crews can’t get in the tunnel because of the smoke. They don’t really know how many cars are in this 4 kilometer tunnel.
A man also escaped. He says he saw at least one crushed car.
And he is naive and an idiot. I'm in South San Francisco, in California. We currently have a storm raging outside, in addition to a bad one a couple days ago with tree limbs down. A few years ago we had a tornado touch down in my neighborhood, just blocks from my home. It ripped the roofs off several businesses. So no, our construction in California is not hurricane or earthquake proof.
Thanks for drawing the line.
Horrible situation in a country that has had more than its share lately.
"I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern ship building has gone beyond that." -Captain Smith, Commander of Titanic
"There is no danger that Titanic will sink. The boat is unsinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers." -Phillip Franklin, White Star Line Vice-President
"My mother had a premonition from the very word 'GO.' She knew there was something to be afraid of and the only thing that she felt strongly about was that to say a ship was unsinkable was flying in the face of God. Those were her words." -Eva Hart, Titanic Survivor
Even God himself couldn't sink this ship- Capt. Edward John Smith (legend)
Yep. Its a bad one. I drive through there once in awhile, every now and then. Beautiful country. But one does not expect this.
I don’t think its funny. What if this happened down the street from YOU. For hell’s sake, there has got to be people trapped in those cars or in the tunnel, if not already dead yet from suffocation (unless they found some tunnel emergency exits, which they do have ever 100 meters or so clearly marked).
From the article, the CCTV system in the tunnel shows an area of “up to 100m” has collapsed. I don’t know how crowded the road was, but the survivor’s accounts were pretty scary.
That’s exactly who I was thinking of. I hope all are okay.
I can’t believe some of the insensitive comments I’m reading of this thread. Sad.
Glad you are safe.
No problemo. I can be difficult sometimes ;)
Thanks for the info. I think you my have responded on the wrong threads, but no harm.
