UNITED NATIONS
The United Nations voted overwhelmingly Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state, a long-sought victory for the Palestinians but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States.

Amazing to think how monstrous the UN will appear in the history books. It has not been they, but US strength, that preserved the peace after WWII; and the weaker the US gets on the world stage, the more the UN’s true nature asserts itselfas it happened in the 70s (especially under Kurt Waldheim’s secretary-generalship and the resolution stating that the notion of creating a Jewish state in Israel is “racism”), it is happening now.
It was safe for the US to object - the Admin knew it would pass and had no veto power so it didn’t need to put its money where its mouth is.

Oba 1:15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
The world is so screwed.
The people pissing on the name Charles Martel (Society)? Probably. Anything to kill Jews and appease Muslims.
They are too busy banning Jewish ritual slaughter of animals.
I just googled it, and the Marshall Islands & Micronesia achieved independence and self-government in 1979, and full sovereignty in 1986. Palau followed in 1994. Under some agreement they signed with the U.S., we continue to provide military defense for these countries because they have no military of their own. Nauru achieved independence from the United Kingdom and became a sovereign, independent republic in 1968. Probably why those countries have membership in the UN, whereas, say Guam and Northern Mariana Islands -- both United States Territories -- do not, because their Commonwealths are not independent.
But bottom line, yeah, a couple of tiny island nations with close relations with the U.S. were the only ones on "our side" besides Canada, Panama, and the Czechs. I'm surprised not even Slovakia and Poland sided with us on this one. Panama was a surprise though.
I think it a good thing for the so-called Palis to have their own Nation in the Gaza strip, which is already. Let them be a UN and USA recognized nation and when they continue to send rockets into Israel, then Israel gets to bomb and kill those sub-humans into oblivion. Yup, I’m all for an Arab-Pali nation.
Can’t do that. The Russians and\or the Chinese will veto any action.
Throw the worthless UN out of the USA. They can go to Mexico City... where they belong, in a country that hates the citizens and abuses them nonstop and where Oligopoly rule.
True freeper greatness!
I’m surprised Obama objected.
I do not see much meaning to this, unless it allows nations to move easily give aid to them.
So which is the rightful government of our newest country? The PLO or Hamas? Did the UN have a preference?
Technically, Susan Rice, our ambassador to the UN, objected. I'm not surprised. If she had voted to recognize "Palestine" it would kill whatever remaining chance she has of becoming Secretary of State. Because of internal political pressure, the USA was going to stay on the "NO" side of this debate regardless of how many countries joined us.
>> I do not see much meaning to this <<
It probably is the first step to giving them a seat in the UN, which the PLO will appoint. They're not going to get a capitol or an independently sovereign government, the Palestinians can't even agree on who's in charge of "Palestine" and haven't had elections since 2006.
>> So which is the rightful government of our newest country? The PLO or Hamas? Did the UN have a preference? <<
They don't even have defined boundaries of this "country" (not to mention the two main areas of "Palestine", West Bank and Gaza Strip, are on opposite ends of Israel and not physically connected), which is why recognizing it was ridiculous. It would be like trying to declare Kurdistan is a country, or Carpatho-Rusyn (a culture and people that overlaps areas of present-day Slovakia, Ukraine, and Hungary...Andy Warhol had such ancestry)
Hamas still has firm control of the PA (74 seats in government), compared to Fatah (45 seats), which is why Condi Rice was just as misguided as Susan Rice when she said we should move toward giving them statehood. The government is run by terrorists who have made it clear they believe Israel should be wiped off the map. Makes as much sense as admitting Puerto Rico to Congress if the government was run by the FALN terrorists dedicating to "liberating" the island by blowing up American politicians.
One reason why I'm not a fan of either Rice.
It’s not unprecedented for a country to be disconnected, it is strange though.
What does the UN say about East Jerusalem? Do they consider it the capital of this wonderful new nation?
