In Washington, Americans have two-party government, with a Democratic president and Senate and a Republican House. We had it before November's election and will have it again for the next two years.
Looking back from 2014, we will have had two-party government for most of the preceding two decades, for six years of Bill Clinton's presidency, three and a half years of George W. Bush's and four years of Barack Obama's.
But in most of the 50 states, American voters seem to have opted for something very much like one-party government.
Starting next month, Americans in 25 states will have Republican governors and Republicans in control of both houses of the state legislatures. They aren't all small states either. They include about 53 percent of the nation's population.
At the same time, Americans in 15 states will have Democratic governors and Democrats in control of both houses of the state legislatures. They include about 37 percent of the nation's population.
That leaves only 10 percent in states in which neither party is in control.
The Republican edge is largely a result of the Republican trend in 2009 and 2010. Normally you would expect the Democrats to recoup and shift the balance the next time they have a good off-year. Maybe they will in 2014.
But what's striking now is the wide margins in legislatures for one party or the other in state after state -- most of them, in fact.....
.....States are laboratories of democracy, Justice Louis Brandeis wrote. Citizens of every state can monitor their experiments and judge which set of one-party states is getting better results.

Relief from a Kinder and Gentle Federal Tyranny MUST come from the State Houses. You can hide your head in the sand but there is trouble a-brewing. The Bolsheviks in the USA Nationalized everything that should have stayed at the state level, now there is only one way to relieve the pressure. A Communist Massachusetts and a Conservative Texas could have lived in the same USA. But now the Socialism is coming top down and there is only one exit....
Shut up Barone. You were the one I was counting on this election.
Very interesting. My state, NC, for the first time in...well, almost forever...is one of those 25 that has both a Republican governor (thank God) and a Republican-dominated legislature.
Next....what I really want to see is this: How many of these 25 Republican-controlled states will opt out of Obamacare....
I suppose in some states there is a two party system, but in the Federal Congress the two party system is a joke ,due to the lack of balls and brains on the Repunblican side.
Sucking up to a minorities that voted against you 73% and 93% just is not smart. There is no way to win these people over except to buy them and they are already bought.
I’d be happy if senators actually represented the states they come from.
Argument has always been Dems can win Senate races better then GOP because their candidates are more centrists, but the same issue arises in gov races. Yet 34 states have GOP governors, then why don’t we have 68 GOP Senators? GOP need to determine why they win governorships and replicate the success in the Senate. Even during the 1994 conservative revolution where the House for the first time in forty years went GOP, the hold on the Senate was never that strong. It cannot be GOP can not win statewide support otherwise how did the GOP win governorships??

In Baldwin county, bedroom to Mobile, There's not one Democrat anywhere in the county gvernment.
I wouldn’t exactly call Debbie Stabenow a centrist but Rick Snyder most definitely is. In fact it highlights one of my pet peeves.
Republicans are expected to moderate while democrats have run to full on marxism with zero friction.
He is right.
Having a one party state means you can’t blame anyone but yourself will it all falls apart.
Which it will. The economy will not recover in the short term.

U-Haul rentals are the instrumentation to measure experimental data. The latest data released last week tell us clearly which way the people are flowing.
What is needed is a third-party. Why not a state completely libertarian or completely tea-party?
Repeal the 17th Amendment. The Senate would be a super majority Republican.
I disagree.
The time is ready and ripe to support conservatives in the House and Senate -- dry up funding for the others. And ALWAYS vet future candidates.
Barone is better than after-the-fact analysis than before-the-fact prediction. Never listen to him on the latter..
The reason that there are GOP governors in some of the deep blue states is that those “GOP governors” are very much RINOs.
Check out the last NY and CA GOP governors for example, elected when their legislators and national reps were strongly Dem.
I am sure that is true for many of the other states for which there are GOP govs in nominally “blue” states. I am not sure we wish to gain more RINO senators from those states.
On the other hand, those states which have GOP control of ALL branches amount to 50 Senators. THOSE are the states we NEED to be examining and purging of Dem Senators. It is disgusting how many of those exist, due largely to the invulnerability of incumbents.
