Tunes For The Troops
**Artist Showcase**
Shawn Colvin is one of the leading lights of the so-called "new folk movement" that began in the late '80s. Although she grew out of the somewhat limited "woman with a guitar" school, she kept the form fresh with a diverse approach, avoiding the genre's clichéd sentiments and all-too-often formulaic arrangements in favor of a more personal, pop-influenced style. Colvin's debut record won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991, but it was her 1997 single, "Sunny Came Home," that firmly catapulted her into the mainstream. Although she never revisited that commercial peak again, Colvin still commanded a broad, loyal following into the subsequent decades.
Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, on January 10, 1956. By the age of ten, she had discovered a passion for music and taught herself guitar. After moving twice -- first to London, Ontario, and then to Carbondale, Illinois -- Colvin formed the Shawn Colvin Band, a hard rock outfit whose high-energy demands soon strained her voice. She relocated to Austin, Texas, where she joined the Western swing band the Dixie Diesels and sang with the band until nodes forced a temporary retirement at age 24. In 1983, she moved to New York, where she found a home in the city's singer/songwriter scene and built a following in the surrounding area.
All music is removed on Monday. Thanks to all the DeeJay's for their time & effort providing entertainment for the Troops!

There was lot’s of good food last weekend and leftover’s that never stop.
This week I’ve got a bit of a twofer - songs that are about ‘thanks’ which seemed appropriate, but then I got sidetracked and remembered a bunch of songs from Thanksgivings past - not Thanksgiving songs, but songs that followed me from year to year and became nostalgic. Songs about family, happy days and the majority of them were from the late 60s, 70s & 80s. I realized a bunch of them were Joe Walsh tunes and then last night I caught Joe on the current episode “Live From Daryl’s House” (which is now on TV as well as the webcast). Joe’s new solo Album (the first in 20 years) just slayed me, so that decided it. I’ll feature Joe’s new album “Analog Man”, and a lot of his music that I grew up with, including selections from The James Gang (1968-70), Barnstorm (1970-73) and The Eagles. Joe is a huge influence on me and I really happy he’s back to solo work. For a good time watch the current Daryl’s House episode with the clown prince of rock: http://www.livefromdarylshouse.com/currentep.html?ep_id=75
I just need to reboot and get set up and I’ll be back.

Berlin: Take My Breath AwayThe Eighties, like the Fifties, saw movie studios hook songs to films as a marketing tool. This song from Top Gun was one of the better entries from that decade.

I held onto my video links of Christopher Hogwood’s version of Handel’s “Messiah” from last year. What night should I post them?
