A Soldier's Thanksgiving Over there a soldier's thinking Of a time not long ago, When his loved ones got together; 'Twas Thanksgiving Day, you know. Over there a soldier's dreaming Of a turkey baked just right, Mashed potatoes, golden gravy, Chestnut dressing, pure delight! Over there a soldier's hungry For whipped cream on pumpkin pie. Squares of cornbread, crusts so tender, Homemade biscuits stacked up high. Over there a soldier's wishing He could have one buttered roll. But he feasts on GI rations While his unit's on patrol. Over there a soldier's lying In a ditch, his makeshift bed. Mud and dirt are his companions; Been awhile since he's been fed. Over there a soldier's praying That his open sores will heal. He is sure that he'll feel better Once he has a good hot meal. Over there a soldier's hearing Loud explosions, muffled cries. Shrapnel killed his foxhole buddy Right before his very eyes. Over there a soldier's quoting Scriptures learned at Mother's knee, Proud that he's a mighty warrior, Keeping all his loved ones free. This Thanksgiving as you're eating That sweet corn that grandpa grew, Say a prayer for that dear soldier Who would love to be with you.

This is a most appropriate Hall of Heroes thread, in my opinion. I am sometimes amazed that in this crazy, depraved and God-forsaken age that this Nation still produces brave men and women willing to put themselves in hazard's way for the USA and for the Freedoms we continue to enjoy.
I served and did my job. I'm not a hero, but I take pride that I can walk among those who are heroes and feel no shame. We are Brothers and their heroic deeds ratify the soldierly virtues we all have within us and the Code we are sworn to follow. They are our champions, and we, at least I, am happy to have met some of them and seen those of them in my own outfit in action.
There are few things in life more impressive than seeing one of our highly trained, professional and courageous boys or girls do their stuff.
God Bless them all - God keep them under his healing wings - God save the United States of America!
Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...hope you’ve had a good weekend.
I’m going back to work Monday and anticipate all will be well. I figure I’ll be exhausted by the time I get home, but maybe that will help me sleep (which is still an issue).
Do you have Friday off, too?

I do have Friday off. I just hope I can make it in tomorrow through Wednesday. I have an echo-cardiogram tomorrow and am being put on a 24 hr. monitor.
I picked up the turkey today - 33 1/2 lbs. I brought my youngest son, John Man, with me to carry the bird back to the van. I never noticed until today - the farm we buy from was established by and has remained in the hands of the Iager family since 1839. My father started buying fresh turkeys from them when we moved to this area over forty years ago. During the Reagan Administration they supplied turkeys to the White House.

Falling Short
November 19, 2012
One of the fads of 1970s America was the motorcycle jump. This trend reached its high (and low) point on September 8, 1974. Thousands of spectators gathered around the Snake River Canyon in Idaho to see if Evel Knievel could jump across the chasm in a specially designed sky cycle. In the end, however, it was unsuccessful. Knievel made it only part of the way across the gulf before his parachute deployed and he dropped to the canyon floor below. Some spectators asked, How far across the canyon did he get? But that wasnt the point. He didnt make it all the way across, so he fell short of his goal.
This scene is a good illustration of sin. The Bible talks about sin in Romans 3:23, where Paul declared, All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. No one is capable of bridging the gap between God and ourselves by our own efforts, but the Savior came to do just that on our behalf. Christ perfectly fulfilled Gods standards, then gave His life on the cross to pay for our failure and wrongdoing. Where we could only fall short, Christs work, offered in love, accomplished all that was needed.
Our response is to trust Him and receive this matchless gift of salvation.
There is no other name on earth
By whom salvations given
Save Jesus Christ the Lamb of God,
Gods precious gift from heaven. Stairs
The cross of Christ bridges the gap
we could never cross on our own.

I think it has to be mutual, Conor! Without our brave military to protect us, and to have originally fought FOR us, there would BE no United States!

That's a
"goshawk"? Cool looking bird.
On my bucket list....to see a bald eagle in person.
To: Kathy in Alaska
I don't know if this gives you a real idea as to the size of the bird, but John Man is a full 6 feet tall.
