Economists say high sugar prices tied to US trade tariffs were a big reason Hostess was struggling, but a Mexican company could be a lifeline for Twinkies because it would be able to take advantage of access to lower-priced sugar in Mexico.

As well as lower paid non-union workers!

Grupo de Bimbos? What the Fluke? Is this one of those “war on women” things?

The artificially high priced sugar is another thing I hate about government. It’s a reason they use corn syrup in soda, a crime... those trade barriers meant to simply raise prices to benefit a few should be done away with.

So do people still think tariffs are the answer?

Sugar is the least of their worries ~ antiquated technology is a big part of their position in the industry AND the price of flour is simply above the price point their company was organized to live under.

Now about how the Mexican tortilla manufacturers are doing, they do Guerrero ~ no lard, no trans fats ~ no flour in their pure white corn tortillas.

20 years ago you'd almost always find grit of some kind in any sort of soft corn tortilla from Mexico. Now you get pure white corn tortillas with no grit ~ and their texture is nearly that of top end pie dough!

This morning I had a 2 egg omlette ~ with mushrooms, green onions and 5 year aged cheddar ~ all blended ~ PLUS 4 Guerrero white corn tortillas wrapped around raspberry preserves.

All top quality foods ~ but these tortillas are going to be making a run against your ordinary fluff bread.

I knew Bimbo would be waiting in the wings to scarf up Hostess.

Our local Walmart in southern DE carries their stuff, as there is a large Spanish speaking population in the area.

I guess Ho-Ho’s are now “Bimbo-Bimbo’s”.

Same company that bought Mrs. Baird’s bakeries in Fort Worth a few years ago. Mrs. Baird’s had been family owned for 90 years.

The over powerful sugar lobby in the USA may have something to say about this. I would expect some tariffs if they’re not made in this country with USA sugar

My post from yesterday:

“Hostess Brands to Wind Down Company After BCTGM Union Strike Cripples Operations
Friday, November 16, 2012 4:55:40 AM · 22 of 87

rockinqsranch to pepsionice

I believe a large bakery, or several such large bakeries operating currently within a few hundred feet over our Southernmost border are smiling today as they see themselves as the new owners of certain Hostess trademarks, and copyrights, and begin shipping into the U.S..

A major bakery left California with good reason (CARB Regulations) a few years ago providing the Mexican bakery Bimbo the opportunity to expand their operation, and fill the void from just over the border in Mexico. Seems to me the same will happen to fill the void when Hostess assumes the dead Cockroach position.

(Hmmmm bad analogy, but...)
