BLAZING BROOKS: MEL SAYS 'SADDLES' COULDN'T BE MADE IN 2012

It's a good thing Mel Brooks' inspiration for "Blazing Saddles" struck in the early 1970s and not 2012. Had Brooks come up with the western genre spoof today, it wouldn't pass muster at any major studio.

Brooks himself shared that sad truth during a visit to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night. "Blazing Saddles" starred Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn in a zany send up of classic western films. And while "Superbad," "Bridesmaids" and "Project X" push the boundaries of modern cinema, they couldn't compare to the outrageous gags Brooks sprinkled throughout his 1974 comedy classic. "It couldn't be made today," Brooks tells Kimmel flatly before launching into a classic story about an early preview of the film, and how a man high up at Warner Bros. told him to make some major cuts ... or else. "We had this preview, people went crazy. They laughed, they enjoyed it. Afterwards, he grabs me by the collar and shoves me into an office ... and he says,

TV ads are ridiculous. To see a car, a woman slaps a man's face. In another, a broad calls a man “boring, boring, boring” until he increases his coolness by listening to a horrible song by a singer named Alicia Keyes. Or the people in the home break-in ads, always white males. Whever I see these ads, I remind myself to never purchase the product because of the subliminal message.

And Mel Brooks as the Indian chief who speaks Yiddish- “They darker than us! Woof!” LOL!

I saw it the day it opened in Hollywood.

I was the only person in the theater who cracked up when he first spoke.

Seriously? Was I the only goy who recognized Yiddish in the whole theater?

I also consider “High Anxiety” one of his best as well, not as slapstick as many of his other movies, although it helps if, like me, one is a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan.

Dr. Thorndyke, do you feel that the trauma of toilet training...has a bearing on the sexual future of the adolescent?

Toilet training. That's a vast area. Let's be more specific. Are we talking about...'number one' or 'cocky-doody' ?

I work for TxDOT and every month we get a free "Texas Highways" around payday. My buddy and I greet the guy who passes them out with "Pass these out to the boys in lieu of pay".

"Why do I always get a warped one?"

Most of Sam Peckinpah’s flicks - I seriously doubt any of Peckinpah’s greats could be made today in their original form. I know there was a lame remake of Straw Dogs a while back, but I cannot imagine the feminist crowd would sit still for the fact that women don’t get spared from violence in a Peckinpah film. There would be a certain irony there, of course, as Peckinpah never used violence gratuitously in any of his films. Unlike many modern films that are far more violent.

"Pretty strong meat there from Sam *sniff* Peckinpah

If this movie were made today, it would be that the evil white landowners want to selfishly exploit the land, while the good government wants to use eminent domain to build a bullet train for the people.

but the hero would still be a black man

I don't believe Brooks is wrong. Certain people could get away with making a BS like film today - have you ever seen Undercover Brother? - But most white guys, particularly American white guys, couldn't do it.

On the other hand, I'll bet Mel would make huge bucks if he made a BS Redux, or a BS-The Next Day to just poke a really large stick in the eye of PC.

...oh...and one last thing, them schitzengrubers will wipe you out!

I’ll stick with IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD, WORLD as the funniest.

But I did bust a gut at BLAZING SADDLES.

Even Mel Brooks himself missed the big reason a remake wouldn’t be the same:

The lead white guy didn’t start out hating the lead black guy.

Hollywood simply has not allowed that as part of any formula for years — even in the so-called “buddy movies” where the two leading characters have been partners (usually cops) for years, they’re sniping at each other from the first scene.
