Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck on Thursday warned that police officers will be in danger of layoffs unless the city proceeds with a half-cent sales tax hike planned for the March 5 ballot.
Speaking to The Times editorial board, Beck complained that he is already unable to hire 911 operators, custody officers and mechanics to repair squad cars. And he warned that the LAPD would probably lose 500 officers without the more than $200 million expected from a sales tax increase.

It’s always the legitimate functions of government that they threaten to cut if they don’t get a tax hike. Never the rest of the nonsense.
Someone should have the kahones to say, “OK, I date ya to start layoffs.” I think we need a “jerkass politician” with the kahones to tell the truth and be willing to do the things needed and not apologize for anything. In short, we need a President like Dr. House in “House.”
TAXTAXTAX ELECTELECTELECT
Instead of calling them PINK SLIPS, they need to call them from now on BLUE SLIPS. Hope the door doesn’t hit them on the way out the door. All elections carry consequences. Results are indicative of the choices people make at the polls. Maybe if this is repeated often enough, people will learn at least within the next 4 years.
errata: date ya = “dare ya”
Happens everywhere where you have public service unions.
Every time a city gets short of revenue they threaten to cut cops and firefighters. It’s because they do so many other things that can be cut. It’s blackmail.
It’s not their salaries that are the problem, it’s the retirement.
BTW the city of LA is bankrupt they just won’t admit it. There cops on patrol ratio is much higher than most other major cities. Bratten got people out of the office and on patrol reducing response time, but still one of the lowest number of officers per capita and LA is geographically a very big city.
Dear Police Chief Fat Walrus:
The company, your employer, the City of Los Angeles, chooses not to submit to your threatening public safety.
Since there’s a budget problem, all officers will take a salary cut, and incoming hires get half the current obscene retirement benefits.
Unemployment in CA is fifteen percent. We can get great people for less than the six figures LAPD officers earn.
Problem solved.

Yeah. Call their bluff. LA is a cesspool anyway. A thousand more cops couldn't save that place. Let the Hollywood creeps burn.
Dear Police Chief Fat Walrus:
How about going back to impounding the cars of people without drivers licenses, which state law requires you to do yet you ignore? You could have a cut of THAT revenue since you’re so hard up.
On the other hand, never mind. Because you’re threatening public safety, you’re fired.

Have a bake sale —
I say "Go for it!" If I lived in LA I'd vote for the tax hike ... then move to Texas next week.
So what's the problem? If you lay off the cops, you won't NEED the squad cars. There's no point answering 911 calls when there's no one to respond. And without cops, no one will be arrested so who needs custody officers?
Problem solved.
big deal..its Cally
if one knew that they had to actually work for 30 yrs, could not go and get on early pensions thru "disability" due to stress, and if they were responsive to community needs, it might alter my opinion....
So glad I left LA many years ago...
Put a tax on the Arts Community.
Heck I’m sure Clooney, Weinstein, et al, would be happy to open their wallets
/sarc.
Or wash cars. You have a bunch on LA.
