In his re-election victory speech on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama referred to the United States as a singular “former colony,” when the United States was actually composed of 13 separate colonies prior to gaining independence from the British. “Thank you so much. Tonight, more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its own destiny, the task of perfecting our union moves forward,” said Obama, which was the first sentence of his remarks in Chicago, Ill. Before the United States won its independence from Great Britain with the Treaty of Paris in 1783,

He didn’t grow up here. All he knows about American history came from the likes of Howard Zinn.

Apparently , we are already re-writing history

Thank goodness he holds a law degree , and wasn’t a history major, or I would call into question the effectiveness of our school system

Anyone: Did we have 57 colonies or just 57 states?

the task of perfecting our union moves forward

From what I understand, the intention was to place permanent limits on the degree of union between our sovereign states. So much for the Constitutional scholar and the smartest man to ever hold the Presidency.

Under Obama it has become the Presiduncy. (Just thought that up, and it doesn't adequately describe the nefarious nature of our undercover Marxist revolutionary in chief. But it made me feel a little better.)

Trying to recast himself as a founding father? Like we have been completely stalled out for two hundred years on that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness thing—until he came along to get us back on the true path.Golly gee aren't we lucky he is here to save the republic.

excuse me, but since our most famous Illegal Alien has informed us ignorant American citizens that we are a nation of 57 states, this means that 56 states are being overlooked now...

I know it is just simple arithmetic, but even in USA public schools 57-1 = 56

“former colony” fits in with Obama’s anti-colonialism viewpoint and dreams of his father.

Kenya was a former colony that gained independence. We were 13 former colonies. Just like we have 57 states.

Just another clueless comment from the Clueless In Chief.

Actually originally there were about 55 or 56 colonies. Later on quite a few of them were combined to form the 13 that we traditionally accept and the number we had when we declared Independence.

This is really trivial and after reading the actual quote, I attribute the error to poetic license. We really need to pick and choose our battles. If this is the most newsworthy Obama issue of the day, then no wonder miliions of Republicans stayed home on Election Day.

He’s wrong. It’s not a former colony. It is now a former republic.
