Just a point in fact for the GOP at large:
When Election Day 2016 rolls around, the GOP will enter the night having convinced more Americans to vote for their candidate than for the Democrat candidate exactly one time in 28 years.
Thats ONCE in TWENTY-EIGHT years. Just damn.
I think we’ll survive and I am optimistic that just maybe after another 4 years of this, some people will wise up.
I hate to talk about all this doom and gloom because I don’t think we should sound like those Kerry supporters in 2004 who had to seek psychological help because that madman Bush had been reelected. They were also convinced it was the end for America. Although many of them are still convinced they were right! In any case I don’t want to stoop to their level.
Clinton didn’t win a majority either time.
Sadly, I think you are right, Stevie. The first phone call Obama made tonight after Romney called him, was to thank Bill Clinton - big time - for helping him win this election. The Obamas and the Klintoons are a nice cozy bunch now. God help us...
If you aren't accessible, have a common glass of beer touch like Reagan, you're not going to be elected.
When Obama was elected in 2008 I was afraid the country would soon become a Venezuela or Zimbabwe, but the American people showed a lot of resilience (Tea Party, recapture of the House of Representatives from the Evil Party in 2010). We have survived 4 years, even if badly damaged. Presidents are usually less successful in their second term than in their first (Jefferson, Cleveland, Wilson, FDR, Nixon, and GWB come to mind). Can we mimimize the damage for four more years and hang on until 2017?
I don't know the answer. Maybe we have reached the point of no return. But for the moment I would like to think of the character in Monty Python who shouts "I'm not dead yet!"
“The GOP has added so many issues to their list of polarizing issues that all that remains in use is Economic Issues, Taxes, National Defense, and Foreign Policy.
These issues are not the issues that motivate new voters to come to your party. They just dont.”
Very good observation, and it doesn’t bode well for our side.
Having written what you said above, what ARE the “issues” that you believe “motivated” new voters to vote for the left, this time?
“Only because the GOP can’t manage to win over Latino voters, most of whom are social conservatives and a natural fit for a conservative party”
Don’t worry.
Legalizing the illegals is going to be a top priority of Obama’s second term.
Then, in 2016, you can see how all these new “socially conservative Latinos” end up voting. Probably forever.
Sheesh....
According to the polls, single women made up 23% of the electorate and went 70% to Obama. Their number one issue? The freedom to murder their unborn child in the womb.
I think that it’s time we stop surrendering issues to the left in the name of being non-polarizing that will come back to bite us in short order. The Left is not afraid to touch Social Issues, for example, knowing that the GOP will back down. The end result is that the Democrats win the issue within a few elections.
We need more issues, even if some of them are polarizing.
The Democrats have neutralized the tax issue by making a habit of adding a middle-class tax cut to every campaign. We have not adequately responded. Nobody I know believed Obama was going to raise their taxes, though many of them believed Romney would. These folks aren’t partisans, either.
For all the talk of the Democrats’ “old playbook,” I sure felt like Bob Dole was campaigning again this year.
