It's just too tempting to compare the media response to government relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the response to Sandy. The dichotomy is stark.
ABC News:
*****
The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.
"We're going to die! We're going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!" Donna Solli told visiting officials. "You don't understand. You gotta get your trucks down here on the corner now. It's been three days!"
Staten Island was one of the hardest-hit communities in New York City. More than 80,000 residents are still without power. Many are homeless, and at least 19 people died on Staten Island because of the storm.
*****
Three days after Katrina, New Orleans Mayor Nagin was on the radio, literally weeping about the lack of federal response to the desperation of the city:
*****
"You know the reason why the looters got out of control?" Nagin said. "We have most of our resources saving people. They were stuck in attics, man, old ladies. You pull off the doggone ventilator and look down and they're standing there in water up to their fricking neck."
"I need reinforcements," he said. "I need troops, man. I need 500 buses."
The relief efforts made so far had been "pathetically insufficient," Nagin said.
"They are thinking small, man, and this is a major, MAJOR deal," Nagin said. "God is looking down on this and if they are not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price. Every day that we delay, people are dying, and they're dying by the hundreds, I am willing to bet you."

I had to wait a month after Katrina. I was one of the lucky ones.
Paging Ted Nugent, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
There are already ways of helping out those who are suffering locally.
And they need a lot of it, trust me.
At time stamp 2:08 to 2:11 when the Staten Island President saying that people are buried in their homes with nothing to eat you can see Chuck Schumer laughing.
never seen revolution but really love walking dead.
if the STHF then we have what we need, even a horse in case we have to go rough country LOL.
Midland Beach, New Dorp Beach, Greak Kills Harbor, Princess Bay, South East Eltingvill, South East Annadale, and Tottenville below Hyland Blvd were all in Zone A. Zone A received an madatory evacuation order but it was forced.
I litterally live a 1/2 block from a Zone A destroyed area, and we had one tree down, one leaning on another, and shingles all over. The wind was the worst Iv’e ever seen here, but the ground was dry. I was the surge that got everyone who was killed. Power Outages were mainly from downed trees. Nature is funny, all storms are different
Here’s an angry Coney Island woman who feels SOOOOO entitled to service.
Can you imagine this kind of whining in Japan after a much more tragic 30 foot high Tsunami killed 30,000 people? No one was whining there like this lady:
Lady, YOU chose to live at sea level on Coney Island.
Take responsibility for your own bad luck instead of blaming others angrily.
Any charity you receive is a gift of kindness from other taxpayers. Dont be so demanding with an arrogant sense of entitlement or we wont be inclined to help you at all. Learn some humility.
Should be - “The mandatory evacuation was NOT forced”
I don’t know where that came from, but I never do.
I have been trying to point people to the Catholic Parishes who are directly distributing everything they get within hours.
Where is the government?
On Facebook, where it usually is.
Good luck to you stay safe.
yep
Given that the situation is getting worse in NYC/NJ, any bump that the chair got will be gone fast.
A Cross country broken field marathon. with looters, thugs and mobs to make it interesting.
I know this is a worn out meme, but CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN HAD A REPUBLICAN RESPONDED WITH "SWEETHEART"?????
