NYC Marathon: Runners protest, volunteer for Hurricane Sandy cleanup
UPI ^ | 11/2/12 | GABRIELLE LEVY

At least two groups of people scheduled to run the New York City Marathon Sunday are organizing protests against the city's decision to allow the marathon to go forward, despite Hurricane Sandy's devastation.

Furious over resources going to the marathon instead of to relief efforts, Penny Krakoff, a social worker, plans to take food and supplies to the Staten Island starting line before breaking off to deliver them to Sandy victims.

"I cannot start a 26.2 mile run in Staten Island—people are missing, stranded, in need of resources. Brooklyn and Queens have equal devastation," she told Gothamist. "Parts of Manhattan are without electricity, water, major hospitals are closed. The Bronx too has its own challenges. Today I will volunteer at a city evacuation shelter. Sunday morning I will catch the marathon bus to Staten Island. Not planning to run. Plan to volunteer instead and gather resources (extra clothes, bottles of water, food from runners at the start). Let's not waste resources and attention on a foot race. Who is with me?"

A Facebook group called "Marathon of Relief" with nearly 500 likes also proposes runners show up for the start of the race, and then depart to deliver aid along the route.

"Runners will show up at the starting line, but will break off en masse at different points of the city to deliver supplies to places hardest hit and without power," it says. "This will mean departing from the race, to head to various buildings, running up and down stairs delivering water and canned goods, etc."

And another, with more than 2,700 likes, called "Boycott the 2012 NYC Marathon," has a similar message:

"Due to the catastrophic events, we have decided to wear our Bib numbers on race day, BUT WILL NOT BE RUNNING.

Can’t have a race if no one runs...

Better yet they don’t run and turn around and hand out the food and water meant for them...to those in need.

Bloomberg is going to look like a liberal donkey’s backside.

How about a “Staten Island Fun-Run” while they’re at it? Sheesh

Whatever their affiliation, they’re making my monitor all blurry. May God bless their efforts and multiply their affect.

'Sons of Anarchy' star: Storm aftermath 'a lot worse than how it's being portrayed by media'

My flight has been changed six times now. Finally, I got a flight for Sunday. Then, the city decides they are going ahead with the New York City Marathon. The bridges will be closed, so I can’t get to the airport. How are they doing a marathon when most people don’t have power? On top of it, the hotels in Manhattan have been nice enough to put up people who have no homes. They are charging them $200 as opposed to $700 a night. But now they are throwing these people out because they’ve got people from all over the world coming to run the marathon. They are throwing out the survivors! So I call Jet Blue and say I can’t fly Sunday because I can’t get from Staten Island to JFK Airport. And they said ‘Okay Theo.’ They know me know because I’ve been calling them every 15 minutes. They say, ‘Theo, we can get you on a flight Friday.’ I say book it! I call up the car service, and they say, ‘We can’t pick you up, we have no gas.’ All my friends on Staten Island say, ‘How are we going to get you there? We have no gas.’ And the people who do have gas, don’t want to waste it going to JFK. So I’ve got to call and change my flight again. Now I’m leaving Monday. Everybody says if we don’t have gas in our cars by Monday, if the roads aren’t clear by Monday, that’s it … we’re throwing in the towel.

“What a great slap in that idiot liberal mayor’s pathetic face!!!”

But wait, he and Moocelle stopped NYers from buying big sodas and are providing bc and abortions for everyone.

What an idiot and joke the people of NY have for a faux mayor.

Gloomberg

That's perfect. Even better than Rush's "Doomberg." "Gloomberg" gets the "l" sound in there.

Bloomberg is closing down some of the few gas stations on Staten Island so the long lines of cars won’t inhibit the runners

The race starts on the Verrazano bridge and leaves Staten Island. There are no Staten Island gas stations on the course.

Surreal.

Maybe Bloomberg is afraid that cancelling the race might draw too much national attention to the extent of the disaster and the slow response and thereby have a negative effect on Obama.

is anybody asking if this is a private or city owned event?

I understand this is a PRIVATE business and not owned by the government.

I guess the Death Panels decided that some people are more equal than others and decided that the New York Marathon and the main stream media that is covering it is more important than saving some old people’s lives.

All is well, right now the big O’s rep. Janet Napo and the other Lesbo and future mayor Christie Quinn have been thanking O and the red cross for being there. No mention of the salvation Army who is also helping. Also they are not mentioning the marathon. It is mostly a shill for the Big O and how much he cares.
