This Is What You Should Have At Home When The Frankenstorm Hits
Adam Taylor
October 27, 2012
There's a real possibility that Hurricane Sandy, aka the "Frankenstorm", could cause serious disruption to major metropolitan areas in the North East states in the next few days.
As such, its better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. NYC.gov has some suggestions for a Emergency Supply Kit that you can keep at home:
One gallon of drinking water per person per day Non-perishable, ready-to-eat canned foods and manual can opener
First aid kit
Flashlight*
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries (you can also buy wind-up radios that do not require batteries)
Whistle
Iodine tablets or one quart of unscented bleach (for disinfecting water ONLY if directed to do so by health officials) and eyedropper (for adding bleach to water)
Personal hygiene items: soap, feminine hygiene products, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
Phone that does not rely on electricity
Child care supplies or other special care items
There's also some suggestions for a "go bag" that could be taken with you in the case of an evacuation:
Copies of your important documents in a waterproof and portable container (insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, etc.)
Extra set of car and house keys
Credit and ATM cards and cash, especially in small denominations. We recommend you keep at least $50-$100 on hand.
Bottled water and non-perishable food such as energy or granola bars
Flashlight
Note: Traditional flashlight bulbs have limited lifespans. Light Emitting Diode (LED) flashlights, however, are more durable and last up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs.
Battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries
Keep a list of the medications each member of your household takes,

I have a plain n simple phone attached to my landline, and it works without electricity......
Yeah, I know of the 3 systems, however, “Sandy” isn’t the “Franken” in herself.
I was, per my subsequent post, trying to be playful with the “Al Franken” meme.
If the AGW proponents can be taken seriously about anything, it is their own focus on “Sandy” to further a hysteria using this barely a hurricane.
I’m simply fishing for the most talented at creating pictures to offer up a satellite view of Sandy with a diapered Al Franken superimposed upon this barely a hurricane to make it really scary.
No it doesn’t. It relies upon weak electrical current within the landline itself. It does not require an *external* source of electricity.
A nitpick to be sure, but this is why so many are making sport of that suggestion here.
If -48v lines are off you have no ring and tip to make the circuit. BTW -48 is also regarded as electricity.
Old landlines work independent of the power grid. The signal coming down the wire is all that’s needed.
No Central Office, No Phone.
Very true. I was ridiculing the statement by NYC.gov
Makes stupid people think a landline works without the availability of power.
Maybe you should try a different angle. They were calling it a “fluke” storm as in Sandy Fluke storm. Maybe a giant condom would work into it somewhere.

Here is another confluence of similar circumstances when CO2
was much lower.
Because the lefties need their own Katrina to whine about for years on end.
You live in LA and not in the path of the storm.....not surprised by your post.
To be fair I will say the landlines are far less prone to damage than grid lines. All Central Offices are backed by generator. This is the reason your phone still works most of the time in a grid outage.
My job is to keep systems up during a power failure, and I am talking systems on the grid. The statement by NYC.gov was stupid. If you mean to tell folks landline then say it and explain it.
I support you in this over-hype. I’ve been attacked as a non-caring whatever but it doesn’t sway me. This storm may have rain and winds but the real deal is getting numbnuts off the front page.
Let everybody on the East Coast clear Home Depot and Lowes for a generator.
Obama is going down.
“Did I miss something. Who is blaming it on CO2?
Most people are blaming the NHC for it’s crap models.”
The memo that hasn’t crossed your desk is that all weather has now become climate.
Climate, AGW science, has hijacked weather so that now a drought, a heat wave, a hurricane, a etc......is now super-encompassing of all atmospheric events....even earthquakes, just in case you’re not aware.
It’s not simply NHC’s modeling that is under fire, just ask the MET Office in the UK AS TO how much justified criticism they’ve received for their un-realized wild AGW centric WX predictions.
I’m just scratching the surface as to just how extra-”Sandy” my original reference this gets.
I have a couple of AK’s but only as novelty.
My personal favorite is a Mauser M98 in 8mm Mauser (bought this new last year). This thing is a pleasure to shoot. Operates like a dream. Hits and kills whatever you aim at.
“Our government failed miserably.”
Exactly, but, why?
WX, Climate, science has been hijacked and is a political football.....control.
It sounds too simplistic. Subtlety is like that.
I used to have an old Bell phone. It worked under any conditions. Problem is, even though I have a land line, it has all been upgraded to fiber in our area. Now the old phone does not work anymore. Just be aware that land lines aren’t going to be much of an advantage in the modern era.
