Richard Mourdock: God at work when rape leads to pregnancy

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman is impregnated during a rape, "it’s something God intended."

Mourdock, who’s been locked in a tight race with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly, was asked during the final minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened," Mourdock said.

The media know rape, incest and women’s issues are a minefield.

They also know that the true views of Social Conservative Republicans are shared by a only small minority of the electorate, as well. So it's a productive field to mine.

Of course, due to media bias, Democratic candidates don't get equivalent partial-birth abortion questions in debates. But not much that can be done about that.

My guess is that this race won’t be so tight tomorrow.

Why can’t these guys just shut up about rape and pregnancy? Not every question needs an immediate answer. This could have been answered on November 7th.

I don’t think this going to he am Akin situation... Mourdock immediately “clarified”.., in contrast, Akin simply dug in his heels and never truly backed away from his original statement.

“Only an idiot or an emotional pussy would get bent out of shape about that.”

Or an undecided voter who doesn’t share the “common, Christian belief” that he does.

Why is this different from some muzzie saying 9/11 was the will of Allah?Suddenly rape is the will of God. Rape is evil and the God I believe in is not a party to evil. These are now two Senate races thrown away because two men have little empathy for women who’ve been violated. Abortion is an evil of the highest order, but this is not Margaret Attwood’s dystopic Republic of Gilead . I think, however that Mourdock and Akins might actually be happy there. Me, the idea of watching Harry Reid for at least the next two years is hard enough, but now a Romney win will be diminished by his ability to get anything of value done.

If Joe Donnelly wins this seat I'm going to puke.

Smart but not wise. We should be focusing on the non-rape/incest/threat to mother’s life abortions but noooo everyone wants to be a purist and sink with the ship.

Eh, I didn't think we'd get the Senate to begin with.

The polls don't make it look that way, that's for sure. So I'm trying to figure out what's so great about getting Romney into office when he won't even be able to overturn Obamacare and Reid will continue to block anything else he wants to pass. Granted, maybe he can get the Senate on his side in 2014.

The republicans will take the Senate and the Presidency. Take it to the bank.

The stupidity of the question is the problem. Always the straw man.

The incidence of pregnancy from rape is small to the point of near irrelevance. That being said, we should show love and respect to the women who have the misfortune of having this occur.

They should be helped through the pregnancy and given emotional and financial support followed by the knowledge that their child can live a wonderful life with an adopting couple.

We could go so far as to award them with a large monetary stipend it is so rare.

I have no idea why these fools want to focus on edge cases. How about the normal situations that result in most of the abortions, e.g. abortion style birth control? Why not focus on those cases and win some converts?

Oh, please. We know better than this.

This isn't going to hurt Mourdock with atheists because he never had them to begin with.

Everybody knows what this is really about - shaming Romney-voting women out of voting for Mourdock. Period. And the pile-on by Republican men will only give that 'shaming' credibility.

There is ONLY ONE thing a politician should say when asked about abortion and rape: “What crime has the unborn baby committed?”

Mourdock issued a statement after the debate . . .

“God creates life, and that was my point. God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that He does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick.”

Because they feel they’re on a Divine mission and nothing could possibly go wrong.

I reject that theology. Just because you put scripture next to your theology doesn’t make it correct. God knows all. He knows what we will do. But we are not predestined to follow Him. It is our choice to follow God or not to follow God.

The bigger point is that there are many Christians, like myself, who might be perplexed somewhat by what Mourdock is purported to have said. Make no mistake he is the better candidate. But some borderline voters might not be inspired by his theological expressions.
