Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.

LOL. I think this transcends politics, but certainly will (or ought to) affect the election. The media, at least online, are reporting this, even MSNBC. I am not sure what is happening on air, as I don’t have access in my office.

The “optimal” result would be for the media to carry the ball on this and the GOP could watch from the sidelines as Obama continues to self-destruct. Don’t get me wrong, these lies from Obama should be called out, but I continue to hope (naively, maybe) that the media might do its job this time.

This is a truly substantive story, not just for political points. It will have political consequences against Obama’s interests (at least it should). To the extent possible we should stay above it by expressing our regret that the administration lied like this, to the American public and to the world. Directly referring to the elections should be avoided, in my humble view.

O is counting heavily on his "auto-bailout" to win Ohio. I believe this story can really hurt him here. It can give rise to a "bigger picture" perspective even in those who think O saved the car companies.

I count on some shred of patriotism from auto-bailout supporters to see this attack and subsequent handling as THE overwhelming reason to have a competent president and commander in chief.

At a local hospital parking lot in NE Ohio I saw a soap painted car window (two weeks in a row) that read something like: "Obama lied about the deaths of four good men in Libya. We were attacked by terrorists on 9-11-12."

We got a glimpse of his cornered rat face at the last debate too. Remember his posture through the whole thing. He also gave some clues on how he is going to obfuscate the scandal. He made several comments the other night on how his administration was ‘doing their best to make sure the fighters they were supplying with weapons were responsible parties’, etc.

Watch for this to be the official line when it all hits the fan. He brought up the fact that he was arming and organizing the so called freedom fighters in Libya and Syria several times the other night...which seemed very strange because he has never admitted it with such clarity until then. The media will back him up as best they can and the line will be...’well...we could not prevent some of those arms from getting into the wrong hands’.

This is why Obama could not let the FBI get on the ground in Benghazi until someone removed the evidence of American weapons being used in the attack.

The military quickly moved assets to assist including marines, special forces Apaches and a few other assets that I missed that apparently could have made a difference during the attack. The US has a major base in Sicily, less than 500 miles from Benghazi. There were options...

So, Obama knew two hours in- we had troops available one hour away from Benghazi- and yet he did nothing as the attack lasted for another four hours, and our agents were killed. This is one of the most shameful, frightening acts by a president in US history...

Good observation. To do noyhing is mind boggling.

As mentioned by some of the military types during the Bret Baier special, they thought that even sending a gun ship to sweep the area would cause the attackers to potentially flee.

Your comments provided some reason why that may not have been done.
