A great speech in Lebanon yesterday, as Ohio polls continue to narrow
"About a week ago, I had a debate. ...and I did enjoy myself."
With that opening line, Mitt Romney had a massive crowd of 11,000 people eating out of his hand. The huge attendance caused the audience to spill over its initial boundaries and through the streets surrounding the stage. It was the latest event for Romney, who's now put in a staggering 34 Ohio appearances in his bid to win the must-have state.
The speech, which focuses on the greatness of our nation, is a breath of fresh air for political wonks who've endured the last three years of morose, overly apologetic, presidential navel-gazing.
According to the numbers, the positivity is working. After last week's debate, most respected Buckeye polls show the two candidates in a statistical dead heat, with the Real Clear Politics Average showing Obama up by only 1.3 percent. Before the first debate, Obama was leading by a little over 8 points.
Perhaps more importantly, as the polls tighten, the size of Romneys crowds is surging dramatically. People are finally excited about his candidacy. Obviously the momentum is in Romney's favor so, if he performs well in his second debate Tuesday night, it's likely that he'll pull ahead.
Here's the video of his Saturday speech, which is well worth watching.
What a beautiful Main Street. Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong place. Charming Main Streets are not as common in CA.
Read the article. It explains your concern.
From the direction the closest people are looking, they seem to be right in front of the stage. The road BEHIND the photographer likely holds a similar amount. There is also a cross road perpendicular to the stage and I imagine there would be a whole bunch there, too.
That should take care of the missing 7,000 or so.
He's pretty much limited to union towns, university campuses, 1st grade classrooms plus the vast McMansion frontrooms of the rich, famous and Clooney-Tunes of the entertainment business.
Too many hurting or closed small business shops line the Main Streets of America for him to be welcomed.
The last thing he needs is to hold a speech on a Main Street somewhere and be booed after every sentence.....which he would be.
His options for huge rallies are very limited right now....if not non-existant.
The sky is the limit for Romney!

GW Bush did in 2004
Yes, and even at college campuses, Obama has needed the help of free concerts, like Will-i-am and the Blackeyed Peas at Ohio State just recently. He got 14,000 to show up that day. You should have heard the complaints from the kids who tried to get from one end of campus to the other while he visited. Even those who seem ready to vote for him were duly annoyed.
There are more than those three camo wearers.
I like the sign “Real Recovery”. It feels warm and comforting. Positive.
Romney’s camp sure likes to play with “RR”
Romney and Ryan are a team.
I think of Rags to Riches, Rest & Relaxation, Rolls Royce (LOL) and then there’s Real Recovery. It’ll be a lot of hard work.
I agree, starting with keeping Mr. Romney on track to delivering on his campaign promises. Although with everything that's at stake, I fully expect him to lead in those areas - not wait to be pushed. The deteriorating condition of his country should be all the push that any president needs.
I do like the sound of 'Real Recovery'. That's of the hottest buttons the campaign can push.
Lebanon is one of the most beautiful towns in the country. Yes, the Golden Lamb is still there, in fact the stage is just in front of it.
There are several wide cross streets in this area; the local papers said the crowd filled those also.
Go, Ohio!
See crowd shots in first post.
Sarah drew bigger crowds, but these are still very nice!
My cousin attended a Romney rally recently - took him 4 hours to get there ... usually takes 1. He managed to get in, but they finally had to turn people away .... and those people ended up on hillsides surrounding the venue. The rally was delayed an hour and a half to try to give folks time to get there because of the traffic all converging on the rally site. What you see in pics is often not what is going on ..... Romney is drawing, in comparison to Obozo/Biden, huge and enthusiastic crowds.
Fantastic!
A Republic!
Thank God, and thank you, Lebanon, OHIO!
Do you have another picture becuase that sure isnt 11,000 people. More 4+- thousand.
From the article:
...Mitt Romney had a massive crowd of 11,000 people eating out of his hand. The huge attendance caused the audience to spill over its initial boundaries and through the streets surrounding the stage....
If I had money:
I would rent Bristol Motor Raceway...it seats about 165,000, IIRC.
I would charge $50 per person for a Romney/Ryan campaign appearance. This ticket fee would buy you a Chik-Fil-A hot sandwich, chips & a soda in a can, served buffet style between the gates & your seats.
I would ask Hank Williams JR to sing the national anthem.
I would ask Darrel Waltrip to be the MC.
I would bet that Romney & Ryan could fill this speedway facility.
I would ask a group of active military singers to close the event with God Bless America and America The Beautiful—every single stanza.!
165,000 x $50 would bring in over $7 million for a single campaign event!!
