In 1916, the 43 year old
Sergei Rachmaninov sat down and wrote another set of etudes in his attempt to be the next Chopin. These are more complex than his previous set. Listen to Ashkenazy play superbly. The photo of Rachmaninov in these videos is from the cover of one of his albums for RCA Victor in the Twenties. You almost catch him smiling.
Rachmaninov: Etude-Tableau in C minor, Op. 39/1
Dreamy and otherworldly. That melody hidden in all those notes is the Dies Irae.
Etude-Tableau in A minor, Op. 39/2
Etude-Tableau in F# minor, Op. 39/3
There is a little of Bach in this one.
Etude-Tableau in B minor, Op. 39/4
Etude-Tableau in E-flat minor, Op. 39/5
Etude-Tableau in A minor, Op. 39/6
Etude-Tableau in C minor, Op. 39/7
Etude-Tableau in D minor, Op. 39/8
After all those pieces in minor keys, Sergei ends on a happier note.
Etude-Tableau in D, Op. 39/9
There came a point when the Russian people got tired of dying in a pointless war, and Tsar Nick found himself out of a job. New boss Alexander Kerensky was solemnly told by the Allies to honor Russias commitment to the war, which he did. That was a mistake.
Kaiser Bill put Lenin, who was living in exile in Switzerland, on a diplomatically sealed train, sent him to Russia, and it took the revolutionary only a few weeks to put Kerensky out of a job. Lenin pulled Russia out of the war, negotiated a treaty with Kaiser Bill, and began turning Russia upside-down.
In December 1917, in a scene reminiscent of Dr. Zhivago, Lenins minions confiscated the Rachmaninov estate and put Sergei and his family out in the snow.
A lot of FReepers make fun of those who buy gold bullion coins. You cant eat gold, they say. Better to invest in lead and brass. But you can use gold to bribe your way past communist border guards intent on preventing people from escaping the new Workers Paradise. You can use gold to take up temporary residence in Denmark with your wife and two daughters, and live comfortably. You can use gold to book passage on a ship to New York. You can use gold to set up a comfortable apartment in New York while figuring out what to do next.
Sergei had come to America, the land of opportunity, to make money. Lots and lots of money. As soon as he stepped off the boat in New York, he was greeted by a Western Union messenger boy mangling his name as Sir Jee Ratchmanoff. In his hand were two telegrams, one from Boston and one from Cincinnati. What was in those telegrams? (Heh heh heh.) Thats for next week.

Next week I look at Rachmaninov in America and the millions he made. It’s a fitting cap to a long story.

Glad you enjoyed it.
Here’s one of the more electrifying *hard* rock songs to come out of the seventies, with an unusual 1977 video that got no airplay in the United States, I would have remembered it. No doubt there were fears that it would be seen as somewhat sacreligious. I’m Christian and don’t take issue with it myself, rock came out of gospel, and gospel came out of church.
