I made it home....and have finally found the all-day-missing hearing aid. My Mom says they’ve been shouting all day. He has two, but really only hears, sorta, out of his left ear...the lost one. After crawling around on the floor with a flashlight, I found it the same place as I found it last time...on the headboard under something.

In 1913, the 40 year old Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his second piano sonata. The original version was reorganized and trimmed in 1931, and this is the version heard most often. Just lay back and let it flow.

Corn Palace
October 13, 2012

The walls of the Mitchell Corn Palace exhibit beautiful murals every year. Scenes include birds in flight, Conestoga wagons heading West, Native American teepees, and rural settings. There is one peculiarity about these murals though—they are made out of corn, seeds, and grasses. The outside murals are replaced each year with a new theme, partly because hungry birds eat from them.

Jesus told a parable about birds and seeds: “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it” (Mark 4:3-4). Other seed fell among rocky soil and thorns, making them unfruitful (vv.5-7). But some fell on good ground and yielded an abundant crop (v.8).

Jesus explained that when people by the wayside hear God’s Word, “Satan comes immediately and takes away the Word that was sown in their hearts” (v.15). The devil hates the gospel and seeks to prevent people from believing it. Often he subtly encourages hearers to procrastinate on making a decision or to forget what they have heard. To counter this, in our witnessing we should pray that the Lord of the harvest will cause the Word to take root in receptive hearts.

Lord, please use Your Word to touch the hearts of
those with whom we share it. We know that You
are the One who opens the eyes of the spiritually
blind. Don’t let Satan’s schemes win out.

We plant the seed; God gives the harvest.

Seventies? Cool, there was a lot more going on musically than you'd know from listening to top 40 radio back then. I tend to enjoy late seventies metal and early punk, even songs from earlier that may have anticipated the sound, such as:

From 1974, I believe, love the riff and the proto-punk guitar thrash. The lyrics are a little decadent for me these days but I just tune them out, still love to hear it.

I couldn't find a good live performance that wasn't all salsa-ed up, too bad. There is a very early effort at a video but it's peculiar, he's really not even bothering to try with the air guitar and lip synching, lol, and the sound quality is only mediocre. This is a decent sound quality studio version with just a still photo.

Shortly before his death in 1898, Otto von Bismarck granted an interview to a journalist who asked him if he thought there would be another European war like the Napoleonic wars. The old man grunted assent and said, “It will probably start with some foolishness in the Balkans. There is nothing there worth the life of a single Pomeranian grenadier.” The old Iron Chancellor was right on both counts. Thanks to a dustup in the Balkans in 1912, the European powers stood on the edge, looked into the abyss – and stepped back. In 1914, the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne created an abyss of sufficient size that no one could step back. After three weeks of fluid movement, the war settled into trench warfare, where millions of lives would be lost over hundreds of yards.

In early 1915 in Russia, the 42 year old Sergei Rachmaninov retreated to his Russian Orthodox faith and wrote a choral masterpiece, his “All Night Vigil”. Once again, I’ve drawn a blank on finding videos with English translations of the Old Slavonic text, but this video has a list of the 15 movements with the initial words of each text. The best thing to do is sit back and listen to the angels sing.

Lenin had no sooner replaced Kerensky than this work was banned in the new Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Can’t have any of that “God” foolishness, you know! The dictatorship of the proletariat must reign supreme. All art must be subservient to the state!
