~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Fort Leavenworth, Kansas is the oldest continuously operating military installation west of the Mississippi River. This historic post, noted for its campus setting, open green spaces and hometown character, is the home of the US Armys Combined Arms Center (CAC). CAC, as a major subordinate headquarters of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command, has often been referred to as the Intellectual Center of the Army. It is, in many regards, home base for the majority of field grade officers across the Army. Since its founding in 1827, it has significantly evolved and today, as part of Installation Management Command - West Region, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) by managing and maintaining the home of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center. CAC has eleven major subordinate organizations that are staff extensions and provide expertise for the core functions. All are located at Fort Leavenworth: Battle Command Knowledge System, U.S. Army Information Operations Proponent, Combat Studies Institute, Current Force Integration Directorate, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Combined Arms Center for Training (which includes the Battle Command Training Program and the National Simulations Center). Fort Leavenworth is home to the Military Corrections Complex, consisting of the United States Disciplinary Barracks, the Department of Defense's only maximum security prison, and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility. In addition, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports numerous tenant organizations that directly and indirectly relate to the functions of the CAC, including the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Foreign Military Studies Office. Read More About Fort Leavenworth Here! Colonel Benjamin Grierson formed the 10th Cavalry on 21 September 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It, along with the 9th Cavalry, 24th and 25th Infantry, formed the first all-black regiments in the Regular United States Army. In western Kansas, the Kiowa encountered the soldiers of the 10th as valiant opponents and termed them the "Buffalo Soldiers." On December 1, 1888, General Benjamin Grierson, upon relinquishing command of the Tenth Cavalry stated:
"Always in the vanguard of civilization and in contact with the most warlike and savage Indians of the Plains. The officers and men have cheerfully endured many hardships and privations, and in the midst of great dangers steadfastly maintained a most gallant and zealous devotion to duty, and they may well be proud of the record made, and rest assured that the hard work undergone in the accomplishment of such important and valuable service to their country, is well understood and appreciated, and that it cannot fail, sooner or later, to meet with due recognition and reward." Good morning Pro ((HUGS))
Well, I know you are at work by now but just now getting to the Canteen.
Been very busy, at work and home. Was on the road Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The book signing this past Saturday didn’t go well. Got to NJ late and had to leave by 2, but didn’t get away until around 3 cause we stopped for lunch.
Have another local one this Saturday. And then another at the end of the month.
I’m going to be offering a holiday special on the ebook version of Hooked between Thanksgiving and New Years.
Yesterday was a rainy day here...and cold! Had to start a fire, but got a chance to rest up before coming back to work.
Got to check pings.
Have a sunnylicious day.

Thanks for the prayers, All....I got a call from my Mom about 4:15p. “Do you think you can come home. Dad has fallen, and there is blood all over the bedroom carpet, and his head is bleeding more than I think I can handle.” He is on Warfarin and all bleeding has to be paid attention to in case it won’t stop. Home I went.
He looked like he was ready for Halloween, with blood everywhere. He was lying down with a cold compress on his head, but I got a compress on his head and off we went to the hospital. They came right away with a wheelchair and a tech came out and put a new pressure bandage on and wound it all around his head and then we waited. What a sight in the ER waiting room. After about an hour (they were full and REALLY busy) they took us back into the ER and he ended up in “Hall18”...a bed in the hall. Everyone going by was treated to a guy covered in blood. LOL! (They were still full when we left.)
After about another hour a tech, the same from when we first came, and a doc came and they unwound the bandage....blood started shooting out in about an 8” squirt....squirting everywhere as the tech trying to get the pressure in the right place and the doc starting trying to get the squirting stopped. More pads, more squirting blood, another doctor, more squirting in another direction and about 10 stitches later they got it stopped and the gash stitched up. Then another tech came and cleaned him up, and after about a half hour they came and took blood and then to the cat scan. Finally the doc came back, said his tests were all good and we could go home. Got home about 9:30p.
Into the kitchen, food for both my Mom and Dad, and I went to my computer to check in.....mini scream from my Mom and a LOUD thud! Rush to the kitchen and he had fallen again. Hit nothing on the way down, but he was down. He wanted a pillow and to be left alone. No, we have to get you up and to bed. “Leave me alone!” No...so it took a while but he made it to his knees and was able to help us get him on his feet. The whole way to his room he kept saying, “I can do it myself”. No, hold onto my arm...repeat, repeat. Got him to bed with repeated instruction to wake my Mom if he needed to get up, and not to go ANYWHERE without help.
I will have a walker when I go home tonight. I have been fighting the walker battle for months, but now there is no discussion...HE HAS TO USE ONE. His balance is now a bigger issue.
He was up before I left for work and all extremities are working. He has to be sore from 2 falls, but everything works.

Thank you for the thorough update. I know how hard it is to see parents go through this. Have you had previous experience with walkers? I had a walker for Mom that the front wheels turned, that really helped her.
Just many prayers my dear!

This is a first....the wheels on front sound like a good idea, as the tip of his cane can get stuck.
Thanks for the prayers...he knows he’s losing a little each day.

Also if you can get one that is light. 2 reasons easier for him to use and it helps whoever has to load or unload it out of vehicle.
Again prayers.

Kathy, hope everything goes OK. There is nothing wrong with using a walker. My mom had one for years and my dad made a shelf for her to put her purse or plate on to eat at meals. We have at least three people who use one at church, and no one says a thing.

So sorry about your Dad,but I can empathize with him.
I turned 80 last month and THE BIG FEAR is loss of independence.
Men seem to have a tougher time letting go, so I wish you well.(I’m a woman)
I’ve been lucky,so far,but it’s a day at a time.
The Golden Years. Phooey!!!!

Thank you so much, Mears...he is fighting that loss, but if he wants to be mobile he has to use the walker.
Prayers for your independence.
