They had bought the plant as a shrub at a car boot sale, without realising that is was a cannabis bush.
After the drugs raid Bedfordshire Police took to Twitter to comment their find and posted a photo of the bush growing in what looks like an ordinary suburban garden.
The tweet from Bedford Boroughs local policing team read: 'Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully-biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!'

The police aren't going to prosecute this one, and quite right too.
If the story itself isn't hilarious enough, check out the comments.
Wonderful example of the freedom-loving gardeners taking a far more relaxed view: "One of those would look lovely among my hydrangeas."
Can you be hard on drugs without being hard on ornamental house plants?

I have to say that it does look very nice in the yard.
It would be awesome if they had a hippy yard gnome holding a bong sitting next to it.

One of our school cooks was known for her green thumb....Back in the 70s the kids brought her a plant that badly needed nurturing....Became extremely large so she had the FFA teacher bring it into the school greenhouse. He laughed so hard telling the story and his explanation to the sweet innocent grandma!

Good thing this couple doesn’t live in the U.S. They would be prosecuted, jailed and had their assets seized.
And...if they had any weapons on their property they would have gone to prison.

hum?
They are 70, which means they lived the ‘60s, a properly trimmed bush will result in nice bushy shrub - just saying.
I have to give them credit for the “I’m old and don’t know better”. (That’s gotten me out of two speeding tickets.....me officer I’m an old lady driving a five speed, do you really think I could be driving that fast. Maybe your equipment is faulty)
Yea, good for them.

“The Boys” I worked with had a great sense of humor. When the boss was sick, they sent him a card from me with a Cannabis plant. The aid that delivered it never knew.

I should arrest you geezers, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me" and all that,
but instead, how about some `Ice Cream Man'? And a one and a two ...

I’m guessing that’s what we would call a flea market, or a swap meet.

You mean like this?
To: MalPearce
It’s a gateway plant. Let them get away with this and the next thing you know they will be planting ornamental poppies.

Good thing this couple doesnt live in the U.S. They would be prosecuted, jailed and had their assets seized. AND they'd have had their dog shot. Not sure why exactly, but that seems to be de rigeur at well-managed drug busts these days...

fortunately the bobbies can only severely admonish the dogs,
since they as a rule have no firearms close to hand.
