KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For establishment Republicans, it is decision time in the Missouri Senate race.
Should they return to Representative Todd Akin’s corner?
Many quickly withdrew their support for Mr. Akin weeks ago after his controversial comments about abortion and belief that victims of “legitimate rape” have a biological mechanism to fight off pregnancy, hoping to force him aside so another Republican candidate could battle the Democratic incumbent, Senator Claire McCaskill.
But Mr. Akin called their bluff. He stayed in the race, reckoning that election math would oblige them to stick with him.
Now, with Mr. Akin’s name legally bound to the ballot, the election approaching and new polling data presenting a clearer idea of his chances, Republicans are deliberating whether to renege on their reneging.

You’re missing the point entirely. GOP wins when it doesn’t run from conservatism. With Akin’s missteps the GOPE turning on him became a bigger story than his own words were and just like he said...it did leave front page in a few days. He will likely win in a few weeks despite the rather moderate GOP leadership’s lack of spine.

What Akin said about rape was really not a big deal.
Conservatives panicked, and this (among other things) clouded their judgment when they asked Akin to drop out.
An Akin win might have more to do with his own electability and with the common sense of Missouri voters than it does with a “Romney wave.”
My moral and spiritual support for him never wavered!! If I could vote for him I would!!
Just put a Todd Akin sign up in my yard. My neighbor has one and my daughter has one. McCaskill has 5 MILLION dollars to run with...from the unions, pro choice folks and left wing radicals. We have to win this seat.

I watched the comments and I’m not convinced he spoke out of turn or really made a mistake. He choose his words poorly, but his point was and is valid. Rapes very rarely result in pregnancies and certainly the baby isn’t to blame.
The trouble is the Left pretends to own the “rape” issue and be the defenders of women. Yet, half or more of all abortions are of women. Divorce is a disaster for women. The sexual “revolution” is a disaster for women as are welfare and progressive taxation. There’s little on the Democratic platform that makes real progress for women. It’s actually quite regressive.

I have been posting here since 1999, and I was not aware that saying that women who get pregnant while being raped must have been asking for it was a social conservative position. I must have missed that somewhere...
I don't think that Todd Akin's entire career should be defined by one boneheaded comment, but given that he stepped in, we need to figure the best way to win in this environment. The best way for Akin to win is for Romney to win big in Missouri. The best way for Romney to win big in Missouri is to keep the focus on the economy and foreign policy, and not let this "War on Women" thing get off the ground.

And that's why pro-lifers will not be supporting Willard the anti-life candidate.
IMHO, I wouldn’t be surprised if the ‘12 GOP U.S. Senate gains exceed expectations. A big time win by the GOP, at each and every political level, is very possible, this November and beyond.

Akin has always been his own worst enemy.
The article points out the biggest problem Akin is facing - lack of money. With all the people who are saying that they now support Akin, very few are bringing any bucks with them. The election is four weeks from Tuesday. If the RNC and Rover are going to get back into this race then they had better do it soon.

I tend to agree. For me it was remembering what it was like before Ronald Reagan came along. But I do believe that there is something to the generational thing IMHO. I've noticed how much many young fiscal conservatives love calling themselves Conservatives all the while rejecting most of the social aspects of Conservatism. No delineation.
