AARP has a message for President Obama: Stop using us to score political points.
Obama cited the nonpartisan senior lobby twice in Wednesday's debate when arguing against Mitt Romney's Medicare proposals.
The remarks prompted a polite statement from AARP Senior Vice President John Hishta asking candidates to refrain from mentioning the group.
"AARP has never consented to the use of its name by any candidate or political campaign," Hishta said.
"AARP is a nonpartisan organization, and we do not endorse political candidates nor coordinate with any candidate or political party."
Hishta sent a similar dispatch in August, when the Obama campaign released an ad using AARP quotes to attack Paul Ryan's Medicare policy.
"The next president and Congress will decide the future of Medicare, and the candidates owe voters straight talk not just 30-second ads about what their plans will mean for today's seniors and future retirees," Hishta said in August.
On Wednesday, Obama cited AARP estimates to argue that savings from the healthcare law will extend Medicare's lifetime. He also told Romney that "AARP has said that your plan would weaken Medicare substantially."
AARP supported Obama's signature healthcare law, prompting criticism from conservatives who believe the group is more political and left-leaning than it says.
On Thursday, Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and Charles Boustany Jr. (R-La.) aired these complaints after AARP moved to distance itself from Obama.
"In reality, senior AARP leadership and key White House officials worked closely together on the passage of President Obama's healthcare reform," Gingrey and Boustany wrote in a press memo.
"AARP leadership consistently ignored the deluge of calls from members, the majority of which opposed ObamaCare, and instead continued working in conjunction with the White House to perfect their 'messaging' to seniors," the memo stated.
This is huge. I hope Mitt uses the MISUSE of AARP to hunt after the elderly vote.
“nonpartisan senior lobby”
When pigs fly.
Or when Helen Thomas is beautiful.
Personally I like getting their mailings, especially if there are stamped, enclosed envelopes inside. I send it back in their envelope with a big, black bold NO, YOU SOCIALIST LEFTWING HACKS!
Didn’t the AARP ask for this? They have been sucking up to democRATS for years and now they don’t like it when a socialist cites them?
Another epic FAIL!
More likely, they don't want the Obama anchor around their necks.
There are about 10 pages of comments after AARP’s blog statement and all but one comment are blistering attacks on AARP and their support of Obama and Obamacare. It was a joy to read!
As my 50th is fast approaching, I’m getting things from AARP in the mail. Earlier this week I called them and had the phone rep remove me from their mailing list and every list they share names with. The mailing that got me to call, had a membership card in it. No thanks!
Yessss! It’s the perfect Schadenfreude! I will never be an AARP member because their agenda has nothing to do with helping seniors, and everything to do with electing liberals.
When all is said and done...
Isn’t the AARP just a STUPID insurance company?
It has been reported that the AARP, which supported the passage of the Obamacare bill, is going to make over ONE BILLION DOLLARS in the next ten years because of their involvement with United Healthcare in processing Obamacare insurance applications, claims, etc.
We need more details about this claim. Anyone at FR know any good links re this subject?
AARP is not a lobby nor a senior citizen advocate org.
They are a multi billion dollar insurance seller.
They made a deal with Obama. Pure payolla.
This is just an attempt at damage control. Too late, AARP. You jumped into the 0bama pool headfirst and now you are soaking wet and asking: What pool? Where?
AARP has been in the tank for Zippy along with so many other organizations that profited from his corruption.
AARP is hoping to remain viable after Romney wins. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to find AARP embroiled in a corruption scandal directly linked to 0bama and other prominent Democrats. Could be part of yet another October surprise, though I expect AARP to be a bit player.
To Romney’s future AG: Look into AARP finances. But first go after Holder and the rest of the 0bama cabinet, and the corrupt politicians who knew Zippy was ineligible, yet stood by and did nothing, or worse yet, personally profited from it.
Obama cited the nonpartisan senior lobby...When did that happen?
I’m pretty sure you aren’t limited to the envelope size. You can glue the envelope to a box of bricks.
The only non-partisan thing about AARP is their lips will not part from liberal/Dem/Obama butts.
On the cover of my new 2013 Medicare Advantage policy book...... it’s a thick book, the customer service number is 800 643 4845.
However, rather than dealing with a person over the phone, go online.
Here is their website describing all their plans.
https://www.uhcmedicaresolutions.com/health-plans/medicare-advantage-plans
Selecting a plan is not an easy task because there are many that are tailored to individual needs and are county specific. It takes some work to sort through it all and then make a decision.
It can then be completed on line and there are people available to assist. I never have a problem communicating with them.
The Medicare Advantage Plan my wife and I both have is AARP MedicareComplete Plus Plan 1 (HMO-POS) I bought mine on line the first time and my wife bought her’s later from a local agent. Itwas strange. The plans were identical but were administered differently. That is not true now however. We pay $0 per month with $10 copays at primary doctor and $25 for a specialist. There is an in network maximum out of pocket payment of $3,400. After that medicare kicks in.
So the way we figure it, we are both in good health and as long as our copay bills don’t exceed the $3,400 limit, the $0 per month plan is good for us. There are other plans that have monthly costs but no such limit for those with problems requiring more intense health care.
There is also a drug component. I buy the three prescriptions I have in 90 day quantities from their online pharmacy. This is easy to administer because there is a procedure where the doctor faxes or e mails the prescription in and the order is filled automatically and billed to the credit card on file. They notify when you are running low and then you go online to your account and order for the next 90 days. It works well.
You are restricted to in member doctors or groups. There is a tremendous long list so that is not a problem for me. If you go outside, the copay is increased slightly.
While traveling, I broke my leg in Cheyenne Wyoming nd the plan was accepted at the local emergency room. Three days later I went to an orthopedist (a specialist in plan) in Twin Falls Idaho to remove the splint and get a boot (cast). I traveled on to Alaska to another orthopedist in Anchorage for routine consultation and visited him again in three weeks to remove the boot. It was all seamless and the United card was accepted as routine with no problem.
United looks after you. Once they learn your problems they send you info to be sure you take advantage of wellness procedures built into the plan.
My advice is to go online and study all the stuff and select and eliminate until you get it down to two and then select. I actually made a sheet with the various options and costs for the various plans available so I could have it all in one place to help the decision. The worst problem is learning to speak medicare. There are tons of special terms that end up being acronyms and are somewhat confusing. Once you get it all in your mind you can then speak with alive person to help sort out the hard parts.
One other thing. My wife and I both have a credit card with enough balance available to cover the $3400 out of pocket minimum. It is used only for medical expenses. It provides a good record of medical costs at the end of the year. It is the equivalent of the Republican proposed personal health account done outside an employment situation.
If Obama and is reelected and actually kills my medicare advantage, he is in mortal danger.
I do the same, but write “Obamacare” all over the papers I stuff inside.
As ye sow so shall ye reap, AARP.
I can hardly wait to get old, so when I get a solicitation from the AARP, I can tell them to get stuffed.
They have betrayed their membership and thrown in with Obama on Obamacare. It is too late for them to come crawling back, now.
