Fox’s Wallace Snaps at Radio Host: Romney ‘In Trouble,‘
The Blaze ^ | 10-1-12 | Mytheos Holt

Posted on 10/01/2012 4:47:55 PM PDT by Mozilla

Fox’s Chris Wallace apparently is sick of hearing critiques of polls showing Mitt Romney trailing President Obama, and isn’t afraid to let a wide audience know it. In a clip captured by Media Matters, Wallace tells radio host Mike Gallagher that criticizing the polls is an example of what he terms “craziness,“ and that ”no self-respecting pollster” weights their polls to make party ID even.

Those comments followed others that said Romney is “in trouble” and must win the upcoming presidential debate. In fact, he even had some harsh words for Gallagher when the host called out Wallace for thinking there’s trouble for Romney and believing the polls.

“I actually did some research on this today, which is more than you’ve done,” Wallace said sharply:

Wallace’s harsh delivery, coupled with his dismissal of an argument that a number of conservative pundits find persuasive, obviously won’t sit well with a number of conservatives trying to maintain optimism in the face of poll margins that increasingly look bad for Romney. However, his attack cuts both ways, as he lays into the mainstream media, saying he’s “never seen such bias” in the mainstream media. However, he apparently doesn’t believe the polls are biased in the same way.

He has some evidence for this, in that typically conservative media outlets have shown problematic margins for Romney in recent weeks. Fox News’ own poll shows Romney trailing Obama by five points nationally, with an NBC/Wall Street Journal Poll showing the same margin. Indeed, even Rasmussen shows Obama ahead by one point.

Update: Some regular listener’s of the Mike Gallagher program have pointed out that Wallace is a frequent guest on the program and that Wallace and Gallagher often trade good-natured barbs.

Wallace recently spent his vacation time at George Clooney’s Italian Villa. Need I say more?

Uptight?

I’m an optimist but I don’t wear rose colored glasses.....

For all the noise and examination of the polls and the underlying numbers, Romney still hasn’t closed the sale.....

This is a PROBLEM....

Chris W. just pointed that out.......

If polls are within 5 points going into the election then Romney will win by a wide margin. The undecided vote is not all that undecided and will swing to Mittens. People who are not in the tank totally for Zero are sick and tired of this miserable excuse for a president.

Wallace is progressive as Fox has become progressive.

The media is not our friend.

Turn the TV off and stop subscribing to the newspaper.

Does a talking head make a sound if no one is listening?

therein lies the problem that Wallace won't admit...they want obozo to win at all costs even if it means weighing the polls to unseen proportions and have no respect for themselves..

He’s an effing Democrat like his 60 Minutes Daddy. Always has been. Just been working under cover. I guess the cover is really blown now. If I met him I’d punch him in the jaw.

How sweet it could be on election night. How sweet. MAJOR defeat for the media if Romney pulls this off. We should all pretend to be super down about Romney’s chances just to give the delusionals more false confidence.

Chris was aggressively, even rudely, attacking Paul Ryan yesterday...demanding proof that Ryan and Romney's plan would create jobs and reduce the deficit. And Ryan kept his cool.

But Obama has yet to agree to an interview.

I think Wallace has lost his compass.

I just don't trust this guy!

Yoah Prissy,

Tell me again what the polls showed in 2010.

How’ d that recall work out in Wisconsin? Rube!

It was funny to watch all the “experts” wipe the crap off
Their faces after that charade. Yet here they are playing
the same tune.

Romney is much smarter than Obama (Romney actually studies)...

Obama is planning to lie and rely on the liberal moderators to skate on to victory.

Mitt knows this...and plans to use it to his advantage.

As Obama would say "make no mistake"...Mitt must pulls Obama's fat into the fire. He must attack ever so politely and smile as Obama crackles in the flame.

Mitt knows the world hangs in the balance. This is an existential fight...not just an election.

“”no self-respecting pollster” weights their polls to make party ID even. “

That, of course, is pure b.s.

I happen to know quite a bit about statistical surveying (although, I’ve never done an election poll). There are many potential sources of error. Most media outlets at least know about “sampling error” — or, they at least know enough to report the “margin of error”. Unfortunately, sampling error isn’t the only, or even the most serious threat to the validity of a survey (poll).

“Non-response bias”, and it’s opposite: “voluntary response bias” are common, potentially far more serious than sampling error, and much more difficult to detect or fix. Based on several posts on FR, it appears quite likely that these biases are operating in many polls in this election.

For instance, conservatives are probably more likely to hang up on a pollster — in the belief that the poll won’t be fair. They thus become “non-respondents”, and introduce a “non-response bias” against conservative voting results.

Meanwhile, “progressives” acting in the belief that pollsters are fellow travelers, are more likely than average to respond. They want their views to count; and thus introduce a bias in favour of the liberal candidates. This “voluntary response bias” is almost certainly in play during exit polls. The conservative voter believes his voting record should be kept private; meanwhile, the liberal will saunter past the New Black Panther Party intimidators, and button-hole the hippy with the clip-board. Result? Worthless exit polls.

Contrary to what Wallace says, a “self-respecting” pollster will try to anticipate and resolve these bias problems. In the case of election polling, the pollster should compare known percentages of registered Democrats, Republicans, and independents with the percentages of each in his sample. If these percentages don’t match closely, it’s likely that some sort of response bias is operating. The pollster should try to fix that. One fix (not always the best) is weighting the samples.
