They found an antique Russian Smith and Wesson 44 revolver wrapped in a blanket in the child’s cot near where he was sleeping on a bed.

The gun was loaded and fully operational. Alongside it officers also found a machete.

Mr Arif, aged 42, was arrested nearby and charged with possession of a firearm.

At first, he denied all knowledge of the weapons, saying they had been put there by someone else, but forensic experts recovered his DNA from the trigger guard and the ammunition in the chamber, proving that he had handled the firearm.

Understood. But wasn’t this in England?

I think I understand your comment now. Yes, this was in England. I was contrasting what we have in the United States, to make the point that the Heller decision was crucial to us in this area. As long as the Heller decision holds, it will be impossible for the anti-freedom types to impose British style gradual degradation of the right to arms, because they cannot start with the British denial of the use of firearms for self defense.

Nothing stays the same forever. With the increasing crime in the UK, there is an increasing demand to give homeowners more leeway to defend themselves and their home. There has been a trend to codify that position.

Who knows? It might happen that people in the UK will eventually be able to carry weapons for self defense. It is an ancient right of Englishmen.

It used to be that way. Then the gangs took over and they disarmed the citizens so only the gangs have guns. The cops don’t. They have a special unit that can use guns but only if they’re called out and have to go to an armory to get them. By the time the show up, it’s all over. Stupid Brits.

As i remember without looking it up.....the SW model 3 in 44 Russian was single action

The SW 1st model DA in 44 Russian was double action....i think without getting up and googling serial numbers mine is an 1882 model

They look quite alike......superficially anyhow....mine is very cherry but the TOTW loads by GOREX.....boxed by GOREX anyhow are light BP

i had never seen GOREX but as powder but nonetheless that is the boxing

And of course to further confuse models of that era that looked quite alike is the Frontier model which i think only carried 44-40 also DA

Muggings and killings of the common people does not threaten the security of the State.

Perhaps they should name the governmental apparatus which deals with this problem the "Committee for State Security".

It would seem fitting.

1—As stupid as the gun laws have been, the British publicv has never owned guns en masse. The highest amount of legal guns was 1.6m in 1996, and most gunowners like myself owned more than one.

2—All major UK police forces have firearms units on constant standby, so your assertion re armoury=too late is a nonsense.

Go read The Sun. Several stories in it about cops having to go back to the armory or calling out special cops who are certified to carry guns. Don’t go making accusations until you know all the fact.

Talk with the farmer who was arrested for shooting a home invader. Guy lives in England. His house was broken into several times. OTOH a guy turned in a rusted shotgun he found on his property. He took it to the local cop station and was immediately arrested. Rusted shotgun. So no, don’t tell me you have any rights to self defense. I read this stuff in The Sun. Would The Sun lie???

The Sun is a low-rent tabloid. One thats has just had to apologise to Liverpool soccer fans for slander.

BTW, genius, I AM British. I know a damn site more about the British police than you will ever do.

British police do not have to go back to an armoury, there are specialist firearms units, and they are always on standby and armed.

The farmer was Tony Martin. And it has been explained WHY his actions meant he was convicted. To keep it short, he shot at the scumbags at distance in the back, so his actions wasnt deemed ‘legitimate self-defence’.

I agree the conviction was ridiculous (the judge could have found him guilty and suspended the sentence), but the law is the law.

Again, I am British, you are talking to someone who knows the issue better than you. I am British, I have laways lived here, I am a gunowner, and I have been the victim of a burglary (2008) in which I used violence in self-defence.

Would The Sun lie?. That sound you hear is 60m Brits laughing. If The Sun was American, it would be the National Enquirer.

Do we have as good a right to self-defence as you?. Maybe not. Is that because our laws/rights seem/are muddled?. Probably.

But it a myth that UK people cannot defend themselves. I can personally assure you we do.

Q: Would The Sun lie?

Haha. Oh dear. Yes, it would, it very famously has many times, and it certainly will again.

Not interested in getting involved in this debate again, but that’s a very unfortunate choice of rhetorical question you’ve just used

Yes, because the vast majority of British police are not armed. Everyone knows that. Bar you it seems.

By standby, I mean that the firearms units are always out in cars and can respond immediately. Some of the unit will be training, some out in cars on patrol. They are not sitting in an office near a phone waiting for a call.

Not to get into any more debate on the subject. So reading the same stories in Daily Mail and The Telegraph are true but in the SUN the same stories are lies. Okay.
