The first movement is based on a poem by Mikhail Lermontov, titled Gondola Song.
O cool evening wave
Lop gently under the oars of the gondola
That song again and again the sound of the guitar!
In the distance, now melancholy, how happy,
Was heard the sound of the old barcarolle:
The gondola glides through the water, and time flies through love;
The waters become smooth again and passion will rise no more.
Rachmaninov: Suite #1 for Two Pianos, Op. 5, Barcarolle
The second movement is based on a poem by Lord Byron.
It is the hour when from the boughs
The nightingales high note is heard;
It is the hour when lovers vows
Seem sweet in every whispered word;
And gentle winds, and waters near,
Make music to the lonely ear.
The third movement is based on a poem by Fyodr Tyutchev.
Human tears, O human tears!
You flow both early and late
You flow unknown, you flow unseen
Inexhaustible, innumerable
You flow like torrents of rain
In the depths of an autumn night.
The final movement is based on a poem by Alexei Khomyakov.
The mighty peal rang out over the earth,
And all the air, moaning, shuddered and groaned.
Melodious, silver thunderings
Told the news of the holy triumph.
These are the Kremlins bells tolling on a Russian Easter morning.

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...did you have a good day? Relaxing?
I took the afternoon off to take my Dad to the doctor for his regular 3 month checkup. This is the doc that prescribes the Lexapro. For 89 he’s doing pretty well. I have to get him on the treadmill more, and he can’t sleep so much. Now I can tell him, “The doctor said”. Hoping that this will work.

The first sounds a bit like Mendelssohn or Kreisler but with a Russian flavor.
The second is sheer fun and a showpiece for the violin.
Great to see you Drumbo & I do think I perceived it as swaggers! *Hugs*

And I forgot to mention that it is an honor to post music for the TROOPS and their supporters everywhere.
And you are still “La Loquita”...a small, little bit crazy female. :-)
Lots of lesser known works this week, to include a women’s choral piece that will make you cry. The Seoond Piano Concerto comes next week.
