The federal government has approved the environmental-impact statement for a new Tappan Zee Bridge, and Gov. Cuomo said yesterday the bridge has passed a significant milestone.
Although financing still must be arranged and permits still must be obtained, the governor said he considers federal approval the biggest hurdle.
Building the bridge is actually the easy part, compared with getting the environmental OK, Cuomo said during a conference call with reporters. He said the state expects all three bids to be less than $5.2 billion. In October, President Barack Obama declared the bridge eligible for fast-tracked federal approvals. Cuomo praised the states quick work since then and said he believes the bridge is ahead of other fast-tracked projects aro
Not that its an easy task, but relative to the environmental review, its a straightforward task. So this is the aspect that had me holding my breath....

How's that for a front page yesterday? Thank you NY Post!
There has been a crying need for a bridge across the St. Croix in Stillwater Mn for 30 years.
Environmentalists have been succesfully vetoing construction for 30 years. The legal costs of fighting this I am sure will be 10X the ultimate cost of building it.
We’ve got a vote coming up to stop a second bridge over the Detroit river but I’m for the bridge since Detroit is still the second busiest freight crossing in North America.
“Building the bridge is actually the easy part, compared with getting the environmental OK”
Look no further to know what’s wrong with the economy.
Obama’s got them in his”Hip Pocket”!More Vote-Buying with OUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What’s wrong with the old bridge? It’s less than 60 years old...started 1952...finished 1955.
'Ja wohl!'
It’s structurally unsound. The pilings aren’t in bedrock. They may even be wood. At least that’s what I remember.
Much of it built on creosoted pilings, like telephone poles. They have finally succumbed to rot. Not sure, how London Bridge wood lasted 800 years, but loads were lighter then.
If it goes the way of the Oakland Bay bridge: $6 billion dollars.
Nah.
Indian Dutch. In that order.
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
Check the pic in comment# 1 of this Tappan Zee green light thread.
A Bridge That Has Nowhere Left to Go (NY's Tappan Zee Bridge)
Replacing it was overdue in Dec. 2005.
The clowns only built it to last 50 years. There have been a number of reports of seeing the Hudson through the roadway.
I cross it a couple times a week and it scares the snot out of me.
Thanks for all your comments. I figured I could rely on Freepers to fill me in.
The bridge was deliberately built on the cheap because of the severe funding constraints during the Korean War. I believe it was only designed to last for 50 years.
The Tappan Zee Bridge was built across the widest part of the Hudson River (the word "zee" is Dutch for "sea"). It was built in its current location in order to ensure that it would lie just north of the northern jurisdictional boundary of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey -- thereby allowing New York State to build and operate the bridge on its own without having the toll revenue go to the bi-state agency.
Great front page!!
This bridge, a 5.5 Billion expense that us toll payers from upstate will be paying for for years to come. It’s all very sickening and the cost??? My God!
Badly designed with wooden pilings under the piers that only go into the mud halfway to bedrock.
Its one of the most dangerous bridges in the country.
I don’t know if it’s still there as I haven’t been over that bridge in a while
but on the western end just after you get off the bridge and the Thurway curves north, in the middle in the divider between the two sides there’s an enclosed stairway that goes nowhere. There’s no bridge across the highway or anything and it’s in the middle so pedestrians couldn’t access it anyhow.
It was there for years.
I always wondered what was the hell was the point of it?
