Appearing today at a fundraiser in Kirkwood, Missouri for Senate candidate Todd Akin, former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich offered the support and encouragement that few others in his party have dared give.
Abandoned by the GOP after his infamous legitimate rape comments, and crucified by the liberal and conservative media alike, Akin vowed to remain in the Senate race for the long haul and emerge victorious.
After sharing his toxic views on womens health, Akins conservative donors and supporters pulled out in droves, denouncing the candidates statements. This despite the fact that in 2011 Akin had co-authored a bill with Paul Ryan to narrow the definition of rape to forcible rape, in order to prevent the use of federal Medicaid funds on abortions.
During the fundraiser, Newt Gingrich expressed confidence in Akins chances. This is a winnable race, Gingrich said. I dont see how any national Republicans have a choice after tomorrow.
Gingrich was referring to the September 25 deadline for Akin to withdraw from the race using a court order. Resisting the onslaught of Republicans who urged him to drop out of the race, Akin allowed an August 22 deadline to pass. After tomorrows deadline, under Missouri state law, Akins name will remain on the ballot no matter what. However, nothing suggests that Akin will pull out of the race before then.
The race in Missouri is one of the critical linchpins of the GOPs bid to regain the Senate majority. In the lead before his monumental gaffe, Akin now trails his Democratic opponent, incumbent Claire McCaskill, by 6 points, a Rasmussen poll shows. During the Kirkwood fundraiser, Gingrich stressed that this election was a key to winning control of the Senate.
Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide now attached to Akins Senate bid, addressed the issue of

FREEPERS, donate to Akin. He’s got to be a great candidate because the GOP is ignoring him. His conservative voting record scares those moderates....That says it all. Newt nice job. I’m sending $50 today!
Missouri will come through for Akin...if I personally have to drag him over the finish line.
I plan to do the same thing here in WA...drag Rob McKenna (gov candidate) across the finish line. It’s neck and neck here...working to get a conservative Governor!! This just may be the year. The liberal D running is a very weak candidate...IMO.
Don't give him any ideas.
@JesseRodriguez of NBC is reporting Todd Akin is holding a press conference today at 3PM ESTin St. Louis.
Probably to announce that he's not dropping out. Having just held a fundraiser with Gingrich it's not likely he's going to drop out now.
Not pnly that, the Senate Conservatives Fund is sending out an email polling its supporters on whether it should get involved. I got one today, replied that they should get involved and suport Akin, and said I’d contribute to his campaign. I urge all of the FReepers who receive this email to reply similarly. As with Romney vs. the Illegal, it’s not cancer vs. cancer.
<>Open primaries suck.<>
And yet if you check this list the majority of the states that have them are Republican leaning states.

DeMint is getting behind Akin too. He has a powerful PAC. Huckabee is coming to MO to campaign for Akin and so is Huckabee’s wife.
Let there be NO doubt..there is a stark difference between Scare McCackles and Todd Akin. The choice is clear..we need the senate seat and we need Akin to win.
My favorite Akin quote from the last debate with Scare McCackles, “there is nothing scarier than your insurance company coming between YOU and your doctor except for the FED govt coming between you and your doctor”
Great post Evil Slayer:)
Do you know how long it took Romney to win the nomination? the conservatives and tea party folks were and some still are reluctant to get on board with Mitt. The money Romney spent to win was astronomical.
Akin won and beat out two strong candidates. That is how elections work. Don’t you think we have witnessed enough rule changes during the primary season? elections moved up and rules changed in Fla and Virginia?
GOOOOOOOOOOOOO AKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and shame on the republican establishment that expects us to shut up and allow someone else to pick our candidate.
I just sent a modest contribution to Akin. More for candidates like him and nothing for the national GOP.
I just live all those McCaskill ads that accompany those Akin articles on the web.
I let the gop know my thoughts on their shunning of Akin. It would help if we could burn up their site with Akin supporters.
Joe and Evil Slayer..will you get the word out on this?

Come on!
Name names!
I hope it turns out well for you.
I thought the whole flap with Akin was silly beyond.
I mean, come on, the man apologized!
What’s the rule...that Dems can apologize but the pubs must quit?
The GOP Blue Blood elite always show their yellow streaks at moments like this.
I’m hoping akin wins. Maybe that will put an end to those nanny-nanny-boo-booers who take the Dem side on all these issues.
“...you need to think about knee-jerk statements like the one you just posted....”
Which, by the way, only help the Dems as they try to suppress our voter enthusiasm.
The fight is what it is.
Whining isn’t going to change what is. Throwing out the trash from the WH in November will go a long way towards doing so.
See post 12,14 and 16. This has already been ironed out.
“Four years ago, when Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” was in full bloom, open primaries were great. Times change. “
This was a complete disaster by Rush. It was a HUGE mistake.
Rush may be partly responsible for this oversampling of Democrats in current polls. He advocated changing registration to Democrat so as to vote for Hillary.
NO MORE OPEN PRIMARIES!
RE “Abandoned by the GOP after his infamous legitimate rape comments,”
Aikin said some stupid things, but in the context of allowing abotion in the case of rape, legitimate rape is something to discuss (as opposed to the bogus rape claims that will pop up in order to qualify for the exception.)
