Appearing today at a fundraiser in Kirkwood, Missouri for Senate candidate Todd Akin, former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich offered the support and encouragement that few others in his party have dared give.
Abandoned by the GOP after his infamous “legitimate rape” comments, and crucified by the liberal and conservative media alike, Akin vowed to remain in the Senate race for the “long haul” and emerge victorious.
After sharing his toxic views on women’s health, Akin’s conservative donors and supporters pulled out in droves, denouncing the candidate’s statements. This despite the fact that in 2011 Akin had co-authored a bill with Paul Ryan to narrow the definition of rape to “forcible rape,” in order to prevent the use of federal Medicaid funds on abortions.
During the fundraiser, Newt Gingrich expressed confidence in Akin’s chances. ”This is a winnable race,” Gingrich said. “I don’t see how any national Republicans… have a choice after tomorrow.”
Gingrich was referring to the September 25 deadline for Akin to withdraw from the race using a court order. Resisting the onslaught of Republicans who urged him to drop out of the race, Akin allowed an August 22 deadline to pass. After tomorrow’s deadline, under Missouri state law, Akin’s name will remain on the ballot no matter what. However, nothing suggests that Akin will pull out of the race before then.
The race in Missouri is one of the critical linchpins of the GOP’s bid to regain the Senate majority. In the lead before his monumental gaffe, Akin now trails his Democratic opponent, incumbent Claire McCaskill, by 6 points, a Rasmussen poll shows. During the Kirkwood fundraiser, Gingrich stressed that this election was “a key to winning control of the Senate.”

With the Senate Conservatives Fund — a group that has raised more than $11 million for other Republican candidates — now considering getting involved, Akin might just be on his way to restarting his campaign.

Rules that designate a "winner" with a simple plurality MAY be reasonable for final choice elections in November, BUT, in a multi candidate primary, they can have the result of nominating a candidate that 65% of the voters don't want.
In addition, I would restore the 2/3 rule so that the nominee MUST have a broad base of support among delegates chosen in a fair process that accurately represents what primary voters actually want.
Under a proportional delegate selection system and a 2/3 needed to nominate rule, the current impending catastrophe would have been impossible.
The primary was an open primary. Dems could vote on the Republican ballot. It was not a GOP primary.
As you learn more about the way this CONSERVATIVE site works, you will become more aware that it supports CONSERVATIVES. Being how Todd Akin is the MOST conservative candidate running against an Obama ultra LIBERAL clone for the U.S. Senate seat, most Missourians want McCaskill defeated in the upcoming election.
Now, here's the good point. Missourians will be voting for their candidate for the U.S. Senate. Not Kansas. Not California. No, none of those people are entitled to vote for either Akin or McCaskill. Only Missourians.
If I'm not mistaken, I sense a little bit of sarcasm in your post. I would recommend you do some research into what has been happening lately with the surge Todd Akin is getting in support for his reelection. Did you watch the debate? Did you hear about Newt and DeMint campaigning for him as well as providing fund raisers?
If you are from Missouri (noticed you don't have a state tag),then you already know how most of us feel about getting rid of Obama as well as his clone (McCaskill). If you are from other states or countries outside of Missouri, you need to think about knee-jerk statements like the one you just posted.
I was referring to NEWT...I have supported Akin all along...one of the few...hey, it’s early; only one coffee under my belt.
I don't agree with you. I recommend you watch what happens in the month ahead. Let's agree to get back with each other after the election and discuss this further.

In this case; I was referring to Romney...the candidate rejected by 65% of GOP primary voters. I wasn’t very clear at all...my post was NOT referencing Akin. ‘Conservatives’ should never have turned on him in the first place...I was lamenting that we have Romney instead of Newt.

I have been advocating silence about the process that brought us here until November 7, and I will resume that policy.
I have also been advocating, and practicing, maximum effort for Romney, and will continue.
We shall see.
It wasn't a 'knee-jerk' statement...it was simply confusing. I was lamenting the loss of Newt as a presidential candidate, not Akin. As previously stated; I have supported Akin from square one, even while many Freepers turned against him.
Atkin is going to win this seat.
I also, apologize. Thanks for clarifying your post. I wish Missouri had not used a back room caucus to elect the nominee Romney. We, did, have a primary later on but it was only for state candidates and not presidential candidates. Missouri needs to do away with the caucus process and go with only a primary which includes presidential candidates as well as state candidates.
Open primaries suck...I am sick of the process that allows supporters of the opposing party to interfere with the selection of our candidates. It’s BS.
Will Missouri rise up and rid itself of claire? What the establishment has done to Akin deserves retribution...like Akin in a landslide.
