A Republic Airlines flight attendant showed up to work Sunday at Philadelphia International Airport with a loaded gun in her bag that accidentally discharged, US Airways told NBCPhiladelphia.com.
A US Airways spokesperson confirmed that the employee headed through airport security at Terminal C around 6:50 a.m ET with a gun inside her carry-on bag.
A police officer was called over to check out the gun. That's when it accidentally discharged, the spokesperson said.
The bullet went into a TSA break room where an employee was sitting. No one was injured, police said.
The flight attendant allegedly told police that she forgot the gun was in her bag. Philadelphia Police said she had a legal permit to carry the gun.
The attendant is an employee of Republic Airlines, a small regional partner carrier who operates flights through US Airways.
The woman received a summary citation for disorderly conduct, was taken into custody and released, according to Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Ray Evers.
The plane was heading to Dallas, Texas. Another flight attendant was brought on board and the scheduled flight arrived on time, according the spokesperson.
The name of the flight attendant was not been released.
Did they charge the gun with anything?
A revolver with a safety? ......
Judging from the photo, the flight attendant is not guilty.
Well if you fire all the bullets then the gun is safe.
The S&W Airweight doesn't have a safety.
I guess the officer thought the trigger was the safety.
I would bet money that he or she pulled or pushed the cylinder release then jerked the trigger to see if it was on safe!
Back in the early days of FR, someone found and posted a link to the livecam feed of a revolver on a table. The owner had put a cam on it so that the web community could keep an eye on it to see if it would go off.
I've long forgotten the link, so I can't say whether it's still up or not.
Five will get you ten it was a Glock. No safety. Not good weapon for a handbag. I would have gone with a Bersa 380. It has a safety and a decocker. Even a cop can handle one safely.
What is scary ... The cop probably had a side arm.

Despite the disgusting description, the odds are that it was a striker fired pistol (Glock, M&D, XD) in her purse. Operationally, they are similar to an unlocked 1911.
I have several leaded firearms in my safe at home I hope they don’t decide to ‘go off’ and dammage the safe!
Safety sounds good.
That other thing...not so much!
Son of a Biatch doesn’t even have a visible hammer. It is double action only revolver with a pretty stiff trigger pull. Who would have been charged with manslaughter had the stupid cop actually shot and killed a person while improperly handling an unfamiliar fire arm!? Any guesses?
It was a S&W Airweight which does not have a safety.
Anyone who tests a firearm safety by pulling the trigger is a buffoon.
I have a Heritage .22 western style revolver with a safety. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen on a revolver.
