LOS ANGELES Space shuttle Endeavour, now a permanent resident of the state of California, has traded its winged chariot for a set of custom wheels.
Early on Saturday (Sept. 22), the shuttle was hoisted by cranes off the modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet that flew it to a landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) the day before.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour conducts a flyover on the back of a 747 before making its final touchdown at the Los Angeles International Airport, September 21, 2012. Endeavour will be moved to its permanent home at the California Science Center mid-October.

The space shuttle and the golden gate bridge. They both used to be a part of America.

Wish I had been shooting from the sun side of the flight.
Just beautiful Dragnet2. Thanks for the post.

Replanting and carring for your new trees in Southern California that were either removed or replanted to make way for the shuttle Endeavor.
I believe this is the subject that was being discussed?
When you have to transplant a tree, there is added cost to care and feed the tree. Or are the Southern California tree huggers just going to let the under brush grow up around them?

California Science Center where the Endeavour will have its new home has pledged to replant with many more trees, as well as provide an arborist to give them a good start for the first couple of years
BTW, the title of the thread is "Shuttle Endeavour Hoisted Off Jumbo Jet for Road Trip to L.A. Museum"
It was certainly not about the trees which will be replaced.
Seems a bit odd seeing all these tree huggers appear...

Those are some neat pictures. Did you see it yourself?
To: Lurkina.n.Learnin
Absolutely. I would not have missed this for anything.
Bitter sweet, as I rather see it launching into orbit. But knowing it was being retired, never to be in the air again, I made sure I saw it.

The observatory grounds were packed too.
When it's transported though the streets to the California Science Center, I've heard there will be 300+ thousand on hand to watch this. I know I'll be there.
Lots of Aerospace interest here.

And Houston gets a wood replica of the shuttle.
That’s what you get for crossing the ONE.
