The woman, a gunner in the Royal Artillery, had complained of stomach pains before medics informed her she was in labour.
She gave birth to a son five weeks premature in Camp Bastion on Tuesday.
Mother and baby are both said to be in a stable condition, with a specialist paediatric team from the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, preparing to travel to Afghanistan to assist them on the flight home.
The Ministry of Defence last night confirmed it was against military policy for servicewomen to be deployed on operations while pregnant and said they had been unaware the servicewoman was expecting.
It is the first time a soldier from the UK has given birth while in Afghanistan.
The gunner, who has not been named, had been deployed with the 12th Mechanised Brigade since March and had not been aware she was carrying a child, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.
It is understood the baby had been conceived before she flew to Afghanistan to begin the six-month tour. The gunner was in her 34th week of pregnancy when she went into labour.
The Mother, reported to be originally from Fiji, and baby are being cared for at the Camp Bastion Field Hospital until they are able to safely fly home to Britain.

BS....You really believe she didn’t know??
“Blighty: How did that happen?”
TC
How strange!?
Oh well, God bless her and the baby :-)
Does a woman have the right to lie about knowing whether she is/was pregnant or not?
I seem to remember a Monty Python skit about a woman standing at the sink washing dishes and a baby just dropped down between her legs.

It happens.
Sometimes the pregnancy doesn’t really show. And under high stress it isn’t unusual for a woman’s periods to stop.
I stopped menstruating the entire time I was in basic & AIT.
No mention of a husband. Why am I not surprised?
What trooper!!!
She might have believed she would be home before the delivery.
Artillery is the “Queen of Battle”! Good on her.
Great! The science is settled! “Hey Hon!”
Where was THIS science when I needed it????
Had to use old fashioned begging...would have been so much easier with a study or 2 to back me up....
They aren’t even mentioning her name, and you want them to name her husband? Why would you make such an assumption about this woman who is serving her country?
It’s a plausible scenario that has happened more than a few times - in “civilian” life too, not even with the stresses of being on duty to make one not recognize symptoms (fatigue, back ache, indigestion, etc... would all be a part of adjusting to life in Afghanistan I would guess). Plus stress, plus we have no idea what kind (if any) birth control this woman was using. Maybe it was the kind where she didn’t get a period for months, but it didn’t “take” or something...
People should also remember that they can tell how old an infant is by its size, and the maturity of the lungs and other development markers to “test” her story as far as conception dates and the like. Seeing as a specialist team is coming in to evac them both, it sounds like the baby is not without at least some complications being born in the field like that, premature and all...
God bless the Mom, her baby, and all who love them. Whether this woman is married, or not!
Well said!
I don’t apologize to you, UKRepublican, or anyone else on this forum or ANYWHERE for that matter for standing up for morality aka Godly principles. PERIOD!
I was knocked up! Neither...
did I--
Wow! That is way more information than I...
or Al need to know!
I don’t know if you were trying to work for a word play because of this situation but Field Artillery is the “King of Battle” and Infantry is the “Queen of Battle”.
Mother is from Fiji, dad is unknown, baby is born in Afghanistan.
Will the baby be eligible to run for King when he grows up?
:)
