Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study
The Grocer UK ^ | Septembe 19, 2012 | Elinor Zuke

The world’s best-selling weedkiller, and a genetically modified maize resistant to it, can cause tumours, multiple organ damage and lead to premature death, new research published today reveals.

In the first ever study to examine the long-term effects of Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, or the NK603 Roundup-resistant GM maize also developed by Monsanto, scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumours and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females, compared with 23 and 14 months respectively for a control group.

“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumours developing earlier and more aggressively -particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts,” said Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist at King’s College London

...GM crops have been approved for human consumption on the basis of 90-day animal feeding trials. But three months is the equivalent of late adolescence in rats, who can live for almost two years (700 days), and there have long been calls to study the effects over the course of a lifetime.

There’s a large variety of heirloom seeds for non-GM tomatoes

Chances are that they have indeed been genetically modified through selection and hybridization over hundreds of years.

We are actually having a decent crop season around my area because of the quality of the soil, but moreso, the genetics of modern grain that can survive not only the worst drought since the 80’s, but also natures own insect destroyers

A little water from the top of the water softener really does the job. ( if you use salt)

It's even more basic that that. Here's what the early meso Americans started with: Teosinte

Everything since has been the product of humans using their God-given intelligence and curiosity. GM crops are no different, except that we can accomplish in years or months what our forebears took centuries to achieve.

Not buying the balance of the cited study, either. Fits the "anti-GM" agenda too neatly.

I didn’t realize until this year that farmers use salt water to force-ripen seed corn and tomatoes.

I knew they used something to stop the green, but wasn’t sure what it was

“That being said, I use Roundup on the weeds in the alley and vinegar on the weeds in the play area.”

As an ex farmer who would very familiar with Roundup; I found I don't know everything this spring.

Here is advice to others out there.
Make sure you have a gallon hand sprayer for Roundup, and another separate sprayer for broad leaf weeds.
Also make sure before you spray broad leaf weedkiller on your lawn; that you actually put broad leaf killer in the sprayer. Things don't turn out very well if you spray Roundup by mistake!

Especially when you are an ex farmer that (used to) makes fun of city people who who accidentally spray Roundup on their yards!

Would love to see where their grant money is coming from!!

Same knee-jerk accusation of paid corruption liberals make against studies refuting Anthropogenic Global Warming.

Yep, corn is grass plant. Most people are not aware of that.

“Not buying the balance of the cited study, either. Fits the “anti-GM” agenda too neatly.”

We have a tremendous amount of ignorance about just about topic that deals with science and technology. People are just lazy. And/or emotional.
Same thing with politics I guess.

My college background/degree was in agriculture. It was all about studying factual information and making decisions based on that.

We rank 50th in life expectancy compared to other countries link

This same propaganda is used to malign our health care system.

God is in the details. 12% of our population (African-Americans) have a life expectancy of 72 years. Also, infant mortality is factored into life expectancy. In the United States, an infant is considered born if it leaves the womb and draws breathe. Many of the countries with higher life expectancies--with their lower infant mortality rates factored in--have convoluted infant mortality measurements which skew their rates downward. In other words, many of their infant deaths don't count towards the total.

Trains can move a ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel.
http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/about-csx/projects-and-partnerships/fuel-efficiency/

Saw this on a TV ad last night. If trains can go 500 mpg, why can’t cars?

Now that I read the article, I see what an idiot they knew I was when they made they made the TV commercial.

Their formula factors in revenue and tons of freight moved to arrive at mpg.

They had me for a little while.

Look at what all that GM corn is doing to American life spans:

From the CDC, “US Death Rate Falls for 10th Straight Year
The age-adjusted death rate for the U.S. population fell to an all-time low of 741 deaths per 100,000 people in 2009 — 2.3 percent lower than the 2008 rate, according to preliminary 2009 death statistics released today by CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. This marks the 10th year in a row that U.S. deaths rates have declined.”

Blacks, whites, males, females, all.

Andorra makes a good comparison, it's about the size of Wal-Mart parking lot.

How can U.S lifespans be increasing with all this GM food?

If we were all eating the corn that God put on this earth before man improved on it we wouldn’t have the obesity problem every one keeps talking about. ;-)

At the link France is listed at #14 but French males live about as long as the overall U.S. life expectancy. French women live much longer than the men and the average is raised, so the question is whether GM foods play any part whatsoever in either live span.
