Larry Dever, the four-term Republican sheriff of Cochise County, has died in a one-vehicle crash near the northern Arizona town of Williams. He was 60. Dever's death was confirmed early Wednesday by the sheriff's department. The department declined to release details of the crash or his death.

Grieving the Loss of Sheriff Dever
“Like all Arizonans, I was shocked to learn this morning that Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever had been killed hours earlier in a one-car accident while traveling in northern Arizona. True to form for this husband, father of six and grandfather, he was reportedly en route to meet several members of his family for a Fall hunting and camping trip in the Arizona high country.
“I had known Sheriff Dever for well over a decade, stretching back to my days with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. I’ll remember him in his cowboy hat - soft-spoken and unfailingly polite, but firm in his beliefs and steady in his service to the law. In the truest sense, Sheriff Dever was a Western lawman and country gentleman.
“Arizona has lost a leader of more than three decades in our law enforcement community. My thoughts and prayers today - and those of Arizonans, I am sure - are with his wife, Nancy, their children, friends and colleagues as they cope with this terrible loss.
“In honor of Sheriff Larry Albert Dever and his 34 years of dedicated service to the State of Arizona, and for the peace of mind he has provided the citizens of Cochise County, I have ordered that flags at all State buildings be lowered to half-staff until sunset today, September 19, 2012, and again on his day of interment, for which services are pending.”
Getting killed on AZ roads is not a hard thing to do. Higher speeds, sandy shoulders and a momentary lapse in attention and you are doing endos.
But even living here, knowing this and having seen it happen a couple times right in front of me, I still have to wonder if he didn’t have ‘help’.
And that’s a sad thing to have reason to think.
This has been on Free Republic all day...numerous articles on this. I am sure he was depressed over his mother’s death...wasn’t paying attention and crashed or he did it on purpose. Either way hope he was ready to see the Savior.
That's my reaction, too. One-car accident...sure.

If it had happened here in the county, I might just barely agree with you.
It happened up in northern AZ on a dirt/gravel Forest Service road while he was travelling to meet up with family for a hunting weekend.
It happened overnight, so fatigue and/or inattention could easily be the reason for the accident. However, that’s just speculation. The accident is under investigation.
The local news is reporting it as a roll over, which means he wandered off the road, somehow. If he did it on purpose it seems he would have found something to run in to. I’ve lived here for 11 years, and getting off the pavement into sand at high speed can be dangerous, as we now see. He was a good man.
Is there a copy of Virginia Sunahara’s ORIGINAL birth record in the trunk?
No. That would be Maricopa County Sheriff Arpaio.
Don’t get me wrong. In all likelyhood he dozed a second, hooked the shoulder and lost control. Happens alot.
I just meant to say that it’s sad that on hearing this, the first thing that went through my (and probably most of our) mind was Obamacide.
It is a real loss. Also, when a coyote jumps in front of your car, do not apply brakes. Actual coyote.
