(CNSNews.com) Exchanging warnings but avoiding confrontations thus far, Chinese and Japanese ships have come within less than half a nautical mile of each other in an ongoing dispute over the sovereignty of contested islands.
Amid deepening tensions in a long-running saga over the uninhabited islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Sunday about the possibility of war between the two Asian countries.
What we don't want is to have any kind of provocative behavior on the part of China or anybody else result in conflict, he told reporters accompanying him on a trip that includes stops in Japan, China and New Zealand.
My purpose will be to urge that they engage in the effort by the Asian nations to try to work out a format for resolving these issues, he added, referring to a code of conduct developed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in a bid to manage unconnected territorial disputes between China and ASEAN members in the South China Sea.

October could be interesting
I’m sure your weak ass boss will go to some hip hop party while the enemies of freedom run rampant, Leon.
The sheet is poised to hit the fan soon.....
Probably sipping an appletini at the clubhouse chuckling at his good fortune in generating this October Surprise.
Somehow I don’t think Japan and China would go at it again in a war. Article is interesting in that they are privately owned one guy that is selling them to Japan.
Don’t forget Taiwan. This may prove that China’s a lot less beligerent than we give them credit for.
Lord knows we wouldn’t lift a finger at this point if they did.
Obama put the fan on high speed and now its wobbling all over

Japan can’t go to war with China, their constitution forbids rearming.
Unless Japanese Neoconservatives manage to amend the Constitution to allow rearming, then any hypothetical war with China will be short.
“Japan cant go to war with China, their constitution forbids rearming.”
Then it would be a wise choice on Japans part to give those disputed islands....
Yep. It would be a disaster but Obama is a commie first.
1) The Japanese have been "re-armed" for decades. The fiction that they haven't (and that has been accepted by the naive and the gullible, and those just not paying attention) is maintaned by the facade of them calling their forces "Self-Defense Forces."
2) The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force is arguably the second most powerful Navy in the World.
3)In a naval war the likelyhood that the Japanese would not only defeat China, but humiliate them (and completely without US assistance), is quite high.

The issue is an welcome distraction that the central party can use to take the Chinese minds off the economic mess. At some point they will need to kill off a lot of males.
Note also the nearby thread about sequestration and the possibility of our Defense budget being cut in very dramatic ways. The time is either not good at all, or else just about perfect (depending on how much you love this country).
A naval war isn't a very effective way to use men as cannon-fodder to kill them off.
Japan is one of the few countries with Aegis cruisers.
I have to admit I am out of date with Japan’s military. All I really remember was the grumbling of Japanese Neocons grumbling over Article 9.
China’s naval buildup seems to be directed towards this exact scenario. Do they have numerical superiority yet?
