Twitter is blowing up over this as Im writing. The best thing I can do to get you up to speed is send you to this nifty Foreign Policy precis of the standoff. Nutshell version: Japan says the islands, which it calls the Senkaku, belong to it. (In fact, the Japanese government formally purchased them from their private owners just two days ago, partly to prevent them from being bought by Japanese nationalists and developed to spite China.) China says that the islands, which it calls the Diaoyu, actually belong to it per post-WWII agreements. The U.S. is obliged by treaty to defend Japan if its attacked; on the other hand, the agreements Chinas citing to stake its own claim to the islands were authored by the U.S. Time for the Foreign-Policy President and Hillary to huddle. Quickly.
Two eternally rival nations, one a rising power and the other fading, locked in a territorial dispute that stems in part from the last time they went to war with each other. What could go wrong?

I predicted this...
The distraction the Chinese have been waiting for is occurring in the ME. Hold tight, this could be a very bumpy ride.
ruh-roh?
Pei Ping.
Of course it is questionable if Japan would resist, but if they were to, the Chinese would be in for a severe shock. Japan possesses what is probably the second most effective maritime force in the world and a naval tradition to go with it.
Has the Obama campaign and MSNBC (I know, there’s no diferrence) blamed Bush or Romney yet?
Ping.
Don’t forget Congress. They can always blame Congress whenever convenient.
Japan would also fight for the islands for the fishing rights around it and the mineral rights to the sea bed under it.
All hell is breaking loose. Can’t a man just campaign and golf?
PLAN subs always skulking around down there, the PRC has also been pilling this kind of stuff in the Spratly Islands also.
Someone will get their eye put out —been brewing a long time.
Japan just signed a deal to operate UAVs off of Guam, which legally is a huuuuge deal in post-war Japanese history.
I have been keepin my eye on this for a long time.
VN and the PRC had a 4 day navy battle over this in 1976 or so..
Send Joe .... he can handle it:
BIDEN: I’m supposedly an expert on foreign policy. Well, you know, an expert from where I come from is anyone from out of town with a briefcase. I do not have a briefcase.
Now there is a great idea for a billboard. RNC, are you listening?
.
And the basketball season will be starting soon!!
China recently took some other islands close to Vietnam and others, yet, closer to the Philippines.
My fear—Our enemies are in Cahoots. They might plan something together to act in concert. On same day—Iran attacks Israel, Egypt attacks Israel, North Korea attacks south Korea, China moves on her islands or attacks Taiwan, Cuba hits Jamaica, Russia moves on Georgia or Belarus. Then what do we do?
After reading the article we made a promise after WW2. Taiwan was also in that agreement.
