Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts.
Cheap Volt lease offers meant to drive more customers to Chevy showrooms this summer may have pushed that loss even higher. There are some Americans paying just $5,050 to drive around for two years in a vehicle that cost as much as $89,000 to produce.

I saw a Volt on the road for the first time last week. I wonder if it had dealer plates on it?
They’ll make up for it in volume though!
What a disaster for the US taxpayer.
What a disaster for the US taxpayer.
A textbook example of what happens when politicians push companies to produce what they think Americans want to drive.
The only one I have seen had government plates and zoomed past me doing at least 85.
If I were a wealthy man I would probably buy one and just stick it in a warehouse.
Someday having a mint condition Volt might pay off nicely, a whole lot of fame for darn few vehicles. Heck, Ming vases use to be a dime a dozen at one time too...
I’ve said it before- Obama did not have to take over the ENTIRE outo industry at once- only one company. The use the media and tax dollars to undercut the price of all the others until he drive them out of business
There is no other reason possible for them to be leasing an 89,000 car for $200 a month. And when people take that deal they dont buy a car from another company.
DO NOT BUY A GOVERNMENT MOTORS CAR until they are no longer owned by the unions or the government.
That 2 year lease is a sweet deal.
...or what they want to force us to drive.
Wifa and I have been watching the remake of Dallas and while we like the new show, I have had to laugh my butt off at the obvious contract with Chevy they have and also at the overhanded GREENIE producers/writers.
One of the main storylines is ‘alternative Energy’ for the good side of the family (Bobby/Chris) and ‘EVIL OIL’ for the bad side (JR/John Ross)
They even push it furthur with the vehicles — Chris drives a Tesla, Bobby has a Hybrid Chevy (not sure of model) and his wife drives a VOLT -— JR is chauffered in a huge Tahoe, and John Ross drives a Corvette
You ALMOST got that right:
A textbook example of what happens when politicians push companies to produce what they want Americans to drive.......
Your warehouse would burn down....
At 85 it’s not going very far.
Just make sure there is nothing else in the warehouse of any value. If the damn thing burns up all will be lost.
I doubt you can disconnect the battery. Probably some serious amperage there.
Why not buy a bunch of them, then sell the parts?
